Preventing Infection Through Proper Wound Care

NERS NEWS – Group 15 of the Nursing Profession B27, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, held a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) session titled “Preventing Infection Through Proper Wound Care” on Friday, March 6, 2026. The event took place in the OK Graha Trimed waiting area of Universitas Airlangga Hospital, targeting patients’ families to increase awareness and encourage infection prevention through correct wound management.

The session was opened by the moderator, Vina Rohmatak, who introduced the group members and outlined the session’s objectives and timeline. The core material was presented by Tri Arsanda Betrisiya and Viktoria Abuk through interactive lectures and discussions, supported by educational posters and leaflets. The topics covered included the definition of post-operative wounds, the importance of wound care, signs of infection, stages of wound healing, and primary principles of post-operative care at home. Additionally, they discussed essential nutrition to accelerate healing and recommended post-surgery mobilization.

The delivery was highly interactive, ensuring participants understood the critical role of hygiene in preventing post-operative infections. The activity was supervised by clinical instructor Ners Dian Mutiara Chairunnisa, who provided further insights into proper cleaning using aseptic techniques. She emphasized the importance of avoiding unverified home remedies and urged families to visit health facilities immediately if a wound fails to improve. She also elaborated on specific nutrients that support faster recovery.

Following the presentation, a Q&A session was held. The six participants showed great enthusiasm, asking questions such as how to properly mobilize post-surgery patients and whether alcohol should be used for post-operative wound care. Through this initiative, it is hoped that patients and their families will fully grasp the principles of wound care, the factors affecting healing, when to change dressings, and the warning signs of infection.
