Nursing Profession Students Provide Counseling on Adherence to Taking Medication to Patients and Families in the Waiting Room of Menur Psychiatric Hospital Surabaya

NERS NEWS – Ners Professional Students Group 2 Stase Mental Nursing Faculty of Nursing Universitas Airlangga has successfully organized counseling in the form of Hospital Health Education (PKRS) with the topic “The Role of the Family in Supporting Patients to Adhere to Taking Medication” on Thursday, 27/10/2022. This activity was carried out directly in the waiting room of the Menur Surabaya Mental Hospital Poly with the target of patients and families who were in the waiting room.

PKRS is one of a series of activities carried out by Ners Professional Students to fulfill competencies as Ners. The theme of this PKRS is “Medication Compliance” which is a condition that is very often found in outpatients (control) at Menur Mental Hospital. Therefore, we from group 2 of Ners Profession feel the need to conduct counseling related to education regarding the importance of drug compliance for patients and families.

“Our group received this topic on medication adherence from the PKRS team, this topic was raised because it has urgency for patients and families. There are still many patients and families who do not understand the benefits and consequences of medication adherence.” Said Syarifah as the head of group 2. The event consisted of delivering materials related to medication adherence to patients and families. The material presented starts from the definition, types, ways of measurement, aspects of compliance and factors that can affect patients and families in taking medication. The presentation of the material was carried out for approximately 20 minutes with one group representative as the presenter.

Not only that, the material presented also contained the causes of patients not adhering to taking medicine, the losses incurred if they did not adhere to taking medicine, what patients could do if they did not adhere to taking medicine, and the role of the family as a very important supporting factor for patients in drug compliance. The harm that will be caused if patients do not adhere to taking medication will cause the emergence of disease recurrence and a high risk of rehospitalization compared to patients who adhere to taking medication. Therefore, medication adherence is crucial to the patient’s recovery process.

During the event, patients and families were very enthusiastic. In the discussion session, there were several questions asked by the patient’s family related to “How to overcome boredom in taking medicine in patients?” “What is the role of the family that is very important to support the patient’s medication compliance?” and so on. Hospital health education this time ended with a brief validation and evaluation related to the material that had been delivered. Overall, the counseling event was well organized and the targets could understand the information that had been given.

“Hopefully, with this counseling, patients and families will better understand the importance of medication compliance. Patients are expected to continue to be enthusiastic about taking their medicine to prevent relapse. In addition, we also hope that family members will always supervise and provide support so that patients can continue to take their medicine regularly.” Harapan Alifianti as a member of group 2 when interviewed directly on 27/10/22.
