Nursing Profession Students Provide Counseling on Recognizing Cold Coughs in the Elderly in the Bougenvile Room UPT Griya Werdha Jambangan Surabaya

NERS NEWS –
Ners Professional Students Group 5 Gerontic Nursing Stages Faculty of Nursing Universitas Airlangga has successfully held (PKRS) with the topic “Recognizing Cold Coughs” on Friday, 11/10/2022. This activity was carried out directly in the Bougenvile room of UPT Griya Werdha with the target of the elderly who were in the Bougenvile room.

PKRS is one of a series of activities carried out by Ners Professional Students to fulfill competencies as Ners. The theme raised at PKRS this time is “Preventing and Overcoming Cold Coughs” where this condition is often encountered lately in the elderly who are in UPT Griya Werdha. Therefore, we from the 5th group of Ners Profession feel the need to conduct counseling related to education on how to prevent and overcome coughs and colds.

“Our group deliberately raised the topic of cough and cold because this condition occurs a lot in the elderly these days. However, the elderly do not know and understand well how to prevent and treat cough and cold properly.” Said Martha as the representative of group 5.

This event consists of delivering material related to how to prevent and overcome cough and cold in the elderly in the Bougenvile UPT Griya Werdha room. The material presented starts from the definition of a cold cough, risk factors that cause cold coughs, how to prevent them, and management that can be done by the elderly who suffer from cold coughs. The presentation of the material was carried out for approximately 20 minutes with two group representatives as presenters.

The material presented was not only that but the speaker also delivered and demonstrated how to cough effectively and how to wash hands with the 5 steps of proper hand washing. After the speaker demonstrated, the speaker invited the elderly to join in practicing how to cough effectively and how to wash hands with 5 steps. Coughing and handwashing etiquette needs to be conveyed to reduce the number of infections among elderly people in the room.

During the event, the elderly were very enthusiastic. In the discussion session there were several questions asked by the elderly related to “Is it allowed if when coughing covered with clothes?” “For cough and cold medicine, what is the medicine, Ners?” and so on. This PKRS ended with a brief validation and evaluation of the material that had been delivered. Overall, the counseling event was well organized and the targets could understand the information that had been given.

“Hopefully, with this counseling, the elderly will better recognize what a cold cough is and understand how to prevent and overcome cold coughs. In addition, we also hope that the elderly can practice how to cough effectively and wash hands with 5 steps in their daily lives.” Raisya hoped as a member of group 5 when interviewed directly on 11/10/22.
