NERS NEWS — Professional Nursing (Ners) students from Group 5-A1, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity in the neonatal ward of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital on Friday, May 1, 2026, carrying the theme “Kangaroo Mother Care: The Benefits of a Mother’s Embrace in Optimizing the Growth and Development of Low Birth Weight Infants.” This activity aimed to increase the knowledge of mothers and families regarding the importance of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in infant care, especially for low birth weight (LBW) babies. The activity, attended by six participants consisting of breastfeeding mothers and patients’ families, was conducted interactively. Education was delivered through presentations, discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. In addition, students utilized leaflets and posters as supporting media to make the material easier for participants to understand.

In addition to delivering the material, the activity also included a live demonstration on how to properly perform KMC. In this session, students demonstrated the correct positioning of the baby during skin-to-skin contact with the mother, how to support the baby’s body, and techniques to maintain the baby’s warmth and safety during KMC. Participants were also given the opportunity to practice directly under supervision, allowing them to better understand the application of KMC. During the session, it was explained that KMC is an effective method of infant care for maintaining body temperature stability, promoting weight gain, and strengthening the emotional bond between mother and baby. This method is highly recommended, especially for LBW and premature infants who are already in stable condition.
Participants showed high enthusiasm throughout the activity, particularly during the demonstration session. They actively asked questions regarding the duration of KMC, safe baby positioning, and how to apply KMC at home. The students provided explanations in a communicative and easy-to-understand manner, enabling participants to follow each step effectively.
