The history of the Nursing Study Program at the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, began with the establishment of the Diploma IV Program for Nurse Educators in November 1997 under the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga. The establishment of this program was motivated by the growing demand for the improvement of professional nursing services and was aligned with the national policy for health workforce development in Indonesia at that time.
The establishment of the Nursing Study Program was the result of a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Health, and other related institutions. Prior to the establishment of the Nursing Science Study Program (Program Studi Ilmu Keperawatan – PSIK), nursing leaders in East Java, under the initiative of the Consortium of Health Sciences (CHS), formed the Nursing Working Group (Kelompok Kerja Keperawatan) in December 1997. Subsequently, the working group conducted a series of intensive workshops beginning in 1998 to support the development and implementation of nursing education programs.
The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga, was officially designated by the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture, through Decree No. 122/Dikti/Kep/1999 dated April 7, 1999, to administer the Bachelor of Nursing Science Program. Furthermore, on June 20, 2008, based on Rector’s Decree No. 5404/J03/OT/2008, the Nursing Science Study Program within the Faculty of Medicine was formally transformed into the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga.
The nomenclature of the Nursing Science Study Program (PSIK) was later revised to become the Nursing Professional Education Program in accordance with Universitas Airlangga Rector’s Decree No. 9626/UN3/KR/2013, effective June 28, 2014. Subsequently, in 2018, pursuant to Rector’s Decree No. 898/UN3/2018 regarding the restructuring of study program nomenclature within Universitas Airlangga, the program was renamed as the Bachelor of Nursing Program for the undergraduate level and the Professional Nursing Education Program for the professional level.
The curriculum implemented in the Nursing Program is based on the curriculum agreed upon by the Indonesian Association of Nursing Education Institutions (AIPNI) and has been further developed in accordance with the policies of Universitas Airlangga. The curriculum adopts the framework of the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI). The duration of study consists of four years for the academic phase and one year for the professional phase, with a total academic workload of 146 credits for the undergraduate program and 36 credits for the professional nursing program.
The educational process utilizes a variety of learning methods, including group discussions, simulations, case studies, collaborative learning, cooperative learning, project-based learning, problem-based learning, and other instructional approaches designed to effectively facilitate the achievement of the intended learning outcomes. Graduates who successfully complete the academic phase are awarded the degree of Bachelor of Nursing (S.Kep.), while graduates of the professional phase are granted the professional title of Registered Nurse (Ns.).
Learning outcomes are achieved through educational activities conducted both on campus and within clinical and community-based learning environments. Clinical learning experiences are undertaken in several affiliated hospitals, including Dr. Soetomo General Academic Hospital Surabaya, Universitas Airlangga Hospital Surabaya, Menur Mental Hospital Surabaya, and Haji Hospital Surabaya. Community-based learning experiences are conducted at various community health facilities and institutions, including UPTD Griya Werdha Jambangan Surabaya and community health centers (Puskesmas) operating under the authority of the Surabaya City Health Office.
Through these academic, clinical, and community learning experiences, the Nursing Program continuously strives to produce competent, professional, and globally competitive nursing graduates who are capable of contributing to the advancement of healthcare services, nursing education, research, and community engagement at both national and international levels.
To become an independent, innovative, and internationally recognized Bachelor of Nursing Program that serves as a leader and pioneer in the advancement of nursing science, technology, and caring nursing practice, with a distinctive excellence in emergency and disaster nursing, guided by ethical principles and religious moral values.
To implement the Tri Dharma of Higher Education at both national and international levels, grounded in national values, ethical principles, and religious morality, through the following commitments:
Providing and continuously enhancing academic education programs in accordance with advancements in science, technology, and innovation.
Conducting innovative evidence-based basic, clinical, and community research to support the development of education and community engagement activities.
Delivering community service initiatives in the fields of nursing science and nursing practice to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities.
The curriculum is designed to ensure alignment with the intended Learning Outcomes (LOs) established by each study program. These learning outcomes are also developed in accordance with the expected educational achievement levels specified in the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (Kerangka Kualifikasi Nasional Indonesia – KKNI). The curriculum structure and course composition have been developed in line with the vision and mission of Universitas Airlangga, while also addressing the needs and expectations of stakeholders. Teaching and learning activities in each course are implemented using a Student-Centered Learning (SCL) approach, which encourages students to take an active role in managing and directing their own learning progress.
The curriculum development and redesign process is conducted in accordance with the Universitas Airlangga Academic Guidelines and SOP-UNAIR-IPP-03 on Curriculum Development. The process involves a wide range of stakeholders, including employers of graduates, alumni, students, faculty leadership, the Faculty Advisory Board, Study Program Coordinators, the Curriculum Development Team, the University Curriculum Team, the Directorate of Educational Innovation and Development (DIPP), the Quality Assurance Agency (BPM), and the Center for Learning Innovation and Certification (PIPS) of Universitas Airlangga.
Through a systematic and participatory curriculum development process, the study program ensures that its curriculum remains relevant, responsive to advancements in science and technology, and aligned with the evolving needs of society and the healthcare sector at both national and international levels.
