Medical-Surgical Specialist Program in Nursing (Sp.Kep.MB.)

Overview

The Specialist Program in Medical-Surgical Nursing at the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, was established based on the Decree of the Executive Board of the Indonesian Accreditation Agency for Higher Education in Health (LAM-PTKes) No. 0001/LAM-PTKes/Akr PSB.PTN-BH/Spe/I/2020 and Rector’s Decree No. 38/UN3/2020. The program achieved “Excellent” accreditation in 2025 from LAM-PTKes under Decree No. 0308/LAM-PTKes/Akr/Spe/III/2025.

The Specialist Program in Medical-Surgical Nursing offers four areas of specialization: Emergency Nursing, Anesthesia Nursing, Operating Room Nursing, and Critical Care Nursing.

The curriculum implemented in this program is developed based on the standards set by the Medical-Surgical Nursing Collegium, with input from the Indonesian National Nurses Association (PPNI) and the Indonesian Anesthesia Nurses Association (HIPANI), and further adapted in accordance with Universitas Airlangga policies. The curriculum follows the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI), with a total study load of 46 credits.

Teaching and learning methods include clinical practice in specialization areas, group discussions, simulations, case studies, collaborative learning, cooperative learning, project-based learning, problem-based learning, and other instructional approaches that effectively support the achievement of learning outcomes.

Learning activities are conducted in various clinical settings, including Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Universitas Airlangga Hospital, and partner hospitals abroad.

Vision Program

To become an independent, innovative, and leading Specialist Program in Medical-Surgical Nursing that pioneers the advancement of advanced nursing care grounded in innovation and leadership, with a distinguished focus on Emergency Nursing, Anesthesia Nursing, Operating Room Nursing, and Critical Care Nursing at national and international levels, grounded in national values, ethical principles, and moral integrity.

Mission Program

To implement the Tri Dharma of Higher Education at both national and international levels, grounded in national values, ethical principles, and religious morality, through:

  • Delivering and advancing the Specialist Program in Medical-Surgical Nursing, with a focus on Emergency Nursing, Anesthesia Nursing, Operating Room Nursing, and Critical Care Nursing, in accordance with developments in science and technology.
  • Conducting innovative and evidence-based clinical research to advance knowledge, technology, and/or the art of Medical-Surgical Nursing and its practice.
  • Providing community service in the field of Medical-Surgical Nursing, based on evidence-based practice, to contribute to societal well-being, grounded in national values, ethical principles, and religious morality.

Program Educational Objectives

  • To produce high-quality specialist graduates who are excellent, independent, and innovative, and capable of contributing to the field of Medical-Surgical Nursing, grounded in ethical principles and religious morality, and able to compete at both national and international levels.
  • To generate innovative clinical nursing research that advances the development of Medical-Surgical Nursing at national and international levels.
  • To develop and implement community service initiatives based on scholarly reasoning and research outputs that contribute to innovative community empowerment, enabling communities to independently and sustainably address problems in Medical-Surgical Nursing.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of the Specialist Program in Medical-Surgical Nursing at the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, are expected to demonstrate the following profiles:

  1. Advanced Clinician
    Able to provide advanced medical-surgical nursing care in managing patient problems according to their specialization, including Emergency Nursing, Anesthesia Nursing, Operating Room Nursing, and Critical Care Nursing.

  2. Clinical Educator
    Able to function as an educator for patients, families, and nurses at lower levels of practice.

  3. Case Manager
    Able to comprehensively manage patient care and coordinate healthcare services to ensure optimal outcomes.

  4. Clinical Researcher
    Able to conduct research on clinical problems encountered in practice according to their specialization, including Emergency Nursing, Anesthesia Nursing, Operating Room Nursing, and Critical Care Nursing.
