Department – Department of Medical-Surgical, Emergency, Disaster, and Critical Care Nursing
The Department of Medical-Surgical, Emergency, Disaster, and Critical Care Nursing is one of the academic departments within the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, focusing on the development of education, research, and community service in nursing care for adult patients requiring medical or surgical treatment, as well as those with acute, chronic, and critical conditions, including emergency and disaster situations. The department plays a strategic role in strengthening the nursing discipline to remain adaptive to advancements in health science and technology, while aligning with national and global policies to achieve comprehensive, professional, and sustainable nursing services.
The department offers tiered educational programs, including the Bachelor of Nursing Program (Undergraduate), the Professional Nursing Program (Ners), and the Specialist Program in Medical-Surgical Nursing. The learning process at each level emphasizes the development of professional competencies, critical thinking skills, and the application of evidence-based nursing practice, with the aim of producing graduates capable of delivering ethical, humanistic, and patient safety–oriented care across various healthcare settings.
This program is designed to equip students with a strong foundation in nursing science, biomedical knowledge, social sciences, and the humanities. Graduates are expected to demonstrate critical thinking, professional ethics, and foundational competencies in providing nursing care to individuals, families, and communities across diverse healthcare settings, with a distinctive strength in Emergency and Disaster Nursing.
This program serves as a continuation of undergraduate nursing education, focusing on the development of clinical skills through practice-based learning. Students are placed in various clinical settings, including hospitals, primary healthcare centers, and community environments, to prepare them as competent, compassionate, and professional nurses capable of addressing health challenges at both national and global levels.
This program provides advanced education focused on managing complex cases in medical-surgical nursing. Graduates are prepared as specialist nurses with high-level competencies in the comprehensive management of adult patients with complex, critical, and chronic conditions, as well as in advancing evidence-based nursing practice within their field.
Academically, the department encompasses three major domains: Medical-Surgical Nursing, Emergency and Disaster Nursing, and Critical Care Nursing. Medical-Surgical Nursing focuses on the care of adult patients with acute and chronic medical and surgical conditions, including physiological disorders involving the respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, digestive, urinary, endocrine, integumentary, musculoskeletal, immune systems, and oncology, as well as perioperative, anesthesia, and outpatient care. Emergency and Disaster Nursing emphasizes the management of patients in emergency situations both in pre-hospital and in-hospital settings, as well as disaster management across all phases: pre-disaster, impact/acute response, and post-disaster recovery. Meanwhile, Critical Care Nursing focuses on the management of patients in intensive care settings, addressing physical, psychosocial-spiritual, and ethical aspects, supported by advanced technologies and evidence-based nursing interventions.
The department hosts two main research groups: the Medical-Surgical Nursing Research Group and the Emergency, Critical Care, and Disaster Nursing Research Group, which serve as collaborative platforms for faculty members and students. Research within the department focuses on innovations in nursing care using a mind–body–spiritual approach, improving the quality of life of patients with chronic, critical, and emergency conditions, and strengthening nursing capacity in managing critical care, emergency, and disaster situations.
In addition to academic and research activities, the department actively conducts professional training programs such as disaster and emergency response training, Continuing Nursing Education (CNE), and community service initiatives based on community resilience. The department also establishes national and international collaborations in education, research, and nursing development to strengthen academic networks and enhance global competitiveness.
