NERS NEWS – Nursing students from the Professional Nursing Education Program at Universitas Airlangga (Unair) organized a health education session on the early detection and prevention of anemia in pregnancy. The event took place on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA), Surabaya. This initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge and awareness of patients and their families regarding the risks of anemia through educational methods and interactive discussions.

The session utilized lectures and Q&A formats, covering topics such as the definition of anemia during pregnancy, its causes, signs and symptoms, the impact on both mother and fetus, and preventive strategies. The education also emphasized the importance of consistent iron supplementation and maintaining a balanced, nutritious diet throughout pregnancy. Leaflets and posters were provided to help participants understand the information more effectively.

This activity was conducted by Professional Nursing students from Group D4.1, under the supervision of academic and clinical instructors. The session began at 09:00 AM WIB at the RSUA Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, attended by pregnant patients and their families who were at the clinic for prenatal check-ups.

The primary objective of this program was to empower pregnant women with the knowledge to perform independent early detection and prevention of anemia. Anemia remains a significant health issue in pregnancy, potentially leading to complications such as premature birth, low birth weight, and increased maternal and infant mortality risks. Consequently, this program serves as a tangible contribution toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.

A student representative expressed that this education is expected to raise public awareness, particularly among pregnant women, to prioritize nutritional intake and regular prenatal visits to prevent anemia from an early stage.

Integrated SDGs:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by improving maternal and child health outcomes.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education, through structured and accessible public health education.
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, reflecting the collaboration between academic institutions and healthcare facilities.

Through this initiative, the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga demonstrates its commitment to improving public health quality. It is hoped that the education provided will have a lasting impact on anemia prevention and contribute to the sustainable improvement of maternal and child health.
