NERS NEWS – Professional Nursing students from Group D1-4 of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) program titled “First Aid for Febrile Seizures in Children.” The event took place on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 09:15 to 09:55 AM WIB at the NICU/PICU Family Waiting Room of Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA). Attended by 11 family members, the session aimed to enhance knowledge and preparedness for pediatric emergencies through lectures and interactive discussions.

The material covered the definition of febrile seizures—seizures triggered by a body temperature above 38°C without intracranial infection in children aged 6 months to 5 years. The session also discussed etiologies such as viral infections and genetic factors, the classification into simple and complex seizures, and potential complications like epilepsy or status epilepticus. Furthermore, students emphasized first aid measures, including placing the child in a side-lying position, loosening tight clothing, and observing the duration of the seizure.

The speakers highlighted the importance of staying calm, not placing any objects in the child’s mouth, and immediately seeking medical assistance if a seizure lasts more than 5 minutes. During the discussion, participants were enthusiastic, asking questions regarding symptoms and prevention, all of which were addressed by the student team. Leaflets and posters were also distributed to facilitate better understanding.

The program was carried out by Group D1-4, consisting of Dhea Triananda, Sefina Rafi Prasetyo, Sasikirana Ariesta Dewani, Tirza Adinda, Azra Rizky Qonita, Sindy Rahma Maisaroh, Sekar Ayu Cahyani, Nur Laila Maulida, Nayla Putri Aisyah, and Riska Dia Amilia. The activity was supervised by academic advisor Dr. Kristiawati and clinical instructor Ns. Devina Nawangsih. Roles were distributed among the team, including Tirza as MC, Nayla and Dhea as speakers, Azra as facilitator, and Sefina as observer.

Febrile seizures often cause panic among parents, frequently leading to incorrect handling such as placing objects in the mouth or forcefully restraining the child. These actions usually stem from a lack of knowledge, even though most febrile seizures are benign. This program aimed to provide a clear understanding of the causes, signs, and first aid steps to ensure families can independently prevent injuries or aspiration, ultimately improving child safety and reducing the risk of complications.

This program represents the commitment of Professional Nursing students to support promotive and preventive services within the hospital environment.
