The Dangers of Choking and Aspiration in Children: Recognize, Prevent, and Respond with CEPAT

NERS NEWS – On Friday, May 8, 2026, a Health Education (PKRS) activity was conducted in the BOBO Room of dr. Soetomo Regional General Hospital with the theme “The Dangers of Choking and Aspiration in Children: Recognize, Prevent, and Respond with CEPAT.” This activity was intended for patients’ families as an effort to increase knowledge and awareness regarding choking and aspiration in children, conditions that may occur suddenly and potentially endanger children’s safety.

The educational session was conducted in an interactive and conducive atmosphere. The material presented included the definition of choking and aspiration, warning signs and symptoms to watch for, causative factors, preventive measures, and initial management when a child experiences choking. The education also emphasized the importance of parental supervision while children are eating or playing, especially for toddlers who have a high sense of curiosity.

Patients’ families appeared enthusiastic throughout the activity from beginning to end. This was reflected in the participants’ active engagement in listening to the material, asking questions, and participating in discussions with the presenters. Several families also shared personal experiences related to choking incidents in children, which further enhanced other participants’ understanding of the importance of quick and appropriate management.

Through this PKRS activity, it is hoped that patients’ families will be able to recognize the danger signs of choking and aspiration in children, implement preventive measures at home, and provide immediate first aid before obtaining assistance from healthcare professionals. The activity concluded with a question-and-answer session and a brief educational review regarding emergency management steps for children experiencing choking.
