Cardiac Abnormalities in Pregnancy Education: Group 1/A2 of Unair Nursing Profession Program Holds PKRS at RSUD Dr. Soetomo’s OBGYN Clinic

NERS NEWS — Surabaya — Group 1/A2 of the Nursing Profession Study Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, successfully organized a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) event themed “Pregnancy with Cardiac Abnormalities: Recognize, Understand, and Manage Risks Early” on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. The event took place in the waiting room of the OBGYN Clinic at RSUD Dr. Soetomo, Surabaya, targeting patients, families, and accompanying individuals.

The counseling session aimed to raise awareness about the management of pregnancy with cardiac disorders. Physiologically, pregnancy triggers cardiovascular system changes that can intensify the heart’s workload and increase the risk of complications for both mother and fetus if not properly managed.

The event was warmly opened by Eka Shafira Audrina as Master of Ceremony (MC), who guided the activities to remain interactive. The main session continued with a collaborative material presentation by Yulisa Putri Nabila and Mohammad Ferdy Arrosyd, using lecture methods, two-way discussions, and visual media in the form of posters and leaflet distribution.

The critical points delivered by the presentation team included:

  • Physiological Changes: How pregnancy multiplies the heart’s workload.
  • Impact & Complications: Medical risks threatening the safety of both mother and fetus.
  • Warning Signs: Recognizing acute symptoms such as shortness of breath (especially when lying down), rapid fatigue, palpitations, and swelling of the extremities.
  • Self-Care: Adherence to follow-up visits at the OBGYN and Cardiology Clinics, limitation of physical activity, and a low-salt diet.

Accompanied by the Clinical Instructor of the OBGYN Clinic at RSUD Dr. Soetomo, participants were reminded of the importance of regular and close monitoring to ensure safe delivery. To provide practical understanding, Galuh Julieta Puriningtyas and Elya Arundati led a demonstration session on practical self-care steps at home, such as how to measure one’s pulse, recognize danger signs that require an immediate ER visit, and visualization of the semi-sitting rest position to reduce breathlessness.

The counseling session was attended by approximately 30 to 40 highly enthusiastic participants during the discussion session. Several critical questions raised by the audience were swiftly answered by the student team, including how to differentiate ordinary pregnancy-related shortness of breath from that caused by cardiac disorders, as well as the safety of normal delivery for individuals with cardiac abnormalities.

Through this activity, it is hoped that patients and families can increase their vigilance, recognize warning signs early, and actively carry out safe and monitored pregnancy management.
