NERS NEWS — SURABAYA – Students from the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga carried out an Integrated Project Based Learning (PJBL) activity titled “PERMATA: Prevention of Early Marriage through Reproductive Education and Free Association Awareness to Reduce the Risk of Premature Birth” at SMKN 5 Surabaya on Monday (18/05/2026) starting at 09.00 WIB until completion. This activity aimed to increase adolescents’ knowledge and awareness regarding reproductive health, the impacts of free association, and the prevention of early marriage to reduce the risk of premature birth.
The PJBL activity began with an opening session by the MC, singing the Indonesian national anthem “Indonesia Raya,” welcoming remarks from the organizing committee chairperson, the school representatives, and supervising lecturers, followed by the presentation of souvenirs to the school. Next, participants completed a pre-test through a QR code to assess their initial understanding of reproductive health. Educational materials were then delivered interactively by students from the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga, covering free association as a risk factor for early marriage, the risks of premature birth, and adolescent reproductive health. The activity proceeded actively through discussion sessions, question-and-answer activities, and ice-breaking sessions to increase participant engagement.
This activity involved fourth-semester students from the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga, Class A3 Group 1, as the organizers of the PJBL activity under the supervision of lecturers Ni Ketut Alit Armini, S.Kp., M.Kes. and Kristiawati, S.Kp., M.Kep., Ns.Sp.Kep.An. The activity was conducted on Monday, May 18, 2026, at SMKN 5 Surabaya, Jalan Mayjend Prof. Dr. Moestopo No. 167–169, Mojo Urban Village, Gubeng District, Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia.
This activity was conducted as a preventive effort to increase adolescents’ knowledge regarding reproductive health and the negative impacts of free association that may lead to teenage pregnancy and early marriage. The education also aimed to raise students’ awareness regarding health risks among teenage mothers, including the increased likelihood of premature birth. In addition, the PJBL activity served as a learning platform for students to apply theories of health education and health promotion directly within the school community.
The chairperson of the organizing committee, Anggun Nabila Yuniar Pratiwi, stated that reproductive health education for adolescents needs to be carried out continuously so that students can have a proper understanding of healthy social interactions and be able to make responsible decisions for their future.
This PJBL activity supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through reproductive health education and prevention of health risks among adolescents.
- SDG 4: Quality Education, through the provision of health education based on interactive learning for students.
- SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration between the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga and SMKN 5 Surabaya in implementing educational activities.
Through this PJBL activity, it is hoped that students of SMKN 5 Surabaya will gain a better understanding of reproductive health, the importance of maintaining healthy social relationships, and the impacts of early marriage on maternal and child health. This program is also expected to become an initial step in increasing adolescents’ awareness to prevent risky behavior and create a school environment that is more concerned about reproductive health.
