NERS NEWS — Surabaya, May 29, 2026 — Nursing Professional Program students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, who were undertaking their Maternity Nursing clinical practice in the Obstetrics and Gynecology High Care Unit (HCU) at Dr. Soetomo Regional General Hospital, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion activity entitled “Recognizing Postpartum Danger Signs.” This activity was aimed at patients’ family members as an effort to increase their knowledge, awareness, and vigilance regarding postpartum danger signs.
The educational session was conducted through interactive lectures and two-way discussions tailored to the characteristics of the participants, enabling the material to be more easily understood. The topics presented included the definition of the postpartum period, postpartum danger signs, things that should be avoided during the postpartum period, postpartum complications, and recommended practices during the postpartum period. During this health promotion activity, the Universitas Airlangga Nursing Professional Program students encouraged all participants to engage in two-way communication, making the educational content easier to understand.
The activity was attended by patients’ family members, who demonstrated strong enthusiasm throughout the session. This was evident from their active participation in the question-and-answer and discussion sessions, as well as their ability to recall and explain the information that had been provided. The purpose of this education was to strengthen the role of family members in understanding the importance of the postpartum period, including what should and should not be done during this stage. This Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being, particularly in efforts to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality through improved health knowledge and the early detection of postpartum complications. Through appropriate education, families are expected to become key supporters in monitoring maternal health conditions so that prompt intervention can be sought if danger signs are identified.
The Universitas Airlangga Nursing Professional Program students hope that this activity will increase participants’ awareness of the importance of monitoring maternal health during the postpartum period, encourage families to seek immediate medical assistance when danger signs appear, and apply the information they have learned in their daily lives. Through active and well-informed family support, the health and safety of mothers after childbirth can be optimally maintained.
