Securing Funding: Universitas Airlangga Students Bring Community Service to Life Through the PKM “Biolarvicide for Mosquito Larvae Control”

NERS NEWS — Surabaya, 2026 — Two outstanding students from the Faculty of Nursing successfully secured funding through the PKM-PM (Student Creativity Program in Community Service). The program is the result of teamwork involving Kevin Yehezkiel Harianja (FTMM A’25), Fahruriza Nayla Aura Mahendra (Faculty of Nursing A’25), Atikah Kurniawati (Faculty of Nursing A’25), and Kayla Alpha Hanundita Suli (Faculty of Dental Medicine A’25). This achievement was announced online through the website of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

The four students developed a PKM proposal under the community service category entitled, “LARVACLE: Community Empowerment in Utilizing Moringa Leaves and Papaya Seeds as Biolarvicides for Mosquito Larvae Control in Pogot Baru, Surabaya.” The title was chosen after team members learned about the concerns of Pogot Baru residents regarding the use of chemical larvicides, as well as the high incidence of dengue fever transmission in their area. In response to these issues, the team immediately designed a solution in the form of LARVACLE, a natural biolarvicide intended to support sustainable mosquito larvae control.

Throughout the development process, the students were supervised by Mrs. Retnayu Pradanie, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., and will continue to receive more intensive guidance to further develop the biolarvicide they have designed. Following the announcement, the team members began preparing to bring the LARVACLE product to life and to design its implementation program so that LARVACLE can provide sustainable benefits to the residents of Pogot Baru and surrounding communities. Atikah Kurniawati, one of the team members, stated, “We hope that through the LARVACLE product, community members will be able to independently produce mosquito larvae control products and minimize the growth of mosquito larvae that can lead to dengue fever.”

Through this achievement, the students have contributed to supporting the implementation of Universitas Airlangga‘s third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), namely Good Health and Well-Being. As reflected in its title, LARVACLE was designed to control mosquito larvae populations, meaning that this product has the potential to help create healthier, mosquito-free environments. Although initially designed to address issues in Pogot, Surabaya, the funding support enables this product to expand further and benefit a wider community. This accomplishment is a source of pride for many parties, not only for the students themselves but also for the faculty, which shares in celebrating their success.
