NERS NEWS — Students of the Bachelor of Nursing Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion Program (PKRS) on nutrition and healthy eating patterns as part of diabetes mellitus (DM) management at Inpatient Ward (IRNA) 5A of the Universitas Airlangga Infectious Disease Hospital. The activity aimed to improve patients’ and families’ understanding of the importance of dietary management in controlling blood glucose levels.
During the PKRS session, the students provided education on Diabetes Mellitus, balanced nutrition principles for individuals with diabetes, recommended and restricted food choices, and the importance of maintaining regular meal schedules. The materials were delivered interactively using easy-to-understand educational media, enabling participants to gain practical knowledge that could be applied in their daily lives.
The activity was carried out in IRNA 5A of the Universitas Airlangga Infectious Disease Hospital as part of the nursing students’ clinical practice. Patients and family members enthusiastically participated in the educational session, asking various questions regarding dietary management, sugar consumption, and strategies for maintaining controlled blood glucose levels during hospitalization and after discharge.
This nutrition and healthy eating education program aimed to enhance patients’ and families’ knowledge in self-managing Diabetes Mellitus. Optimal diabetes management through healthy eating habits can help prevent complications, improve patients’ quality of life, and support the effectiveness of prescribed treatments. The activity represented the implementation of the nurse’s role in promotive and preventive efforts to improve public health.
The implementation of this PKRS activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through improving health literacy and preventing complications associated with chronic diseases. In addition, the activity supports SDG 4: Quality Education by providing evidence-based health education that is accessible and understandable to the community.
Through this activity, it is hoped that patients and their families will gain a better understanding of the importance of adopting healthy eating habits in diabetes management and be able to maintain healthy lifestyle behaviors on a long-term basis. Moving forward, students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, are expected to continue contributing to the improvement of community health through innovative and impactful educational initiatives.
