NERS NEWS — Surabaya — Students from groups D1.2, D1.3, and D1.4 of the Gerontic Nursing rotation in the Nursing Professional Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) activity themed “Active and Passive ROM Exercises for Bedrest Patients in the Mawar Ward, Griya Wreda Jambangan” on Sunday, May 24, 2026. This activity was aimed at older adults undergoing bedrest as an effort to improve their knowledge and skills in maintaining physical function and preventing complications caused by prolonged immobility.
The educational activity was carried out through brief health education sessions, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. The materials covered included the definition of Range of Motion (ROM), types of active and passive ROM exercises, the benefits of ROM exercises for bedrest patients, and the steps for performing the exercises safely according to the condition of older adults. Demonstrations were conducted directly on upper and lower extremity movements so participants could understand the correct techniques.
The health education session was attended by older adults in the Mawar Ward and accompanied by nursing home staff. The activity was conducted in a conducive and interactive atmosphere. Participants paid close attention to the explanations and practiced the exercises according to their individual abilities. Nursing home staff also actively participated in the demonstration session to understand how to safely and effectively assist older adults in performing ROM exercises.

Through this PKRS activity, it is expected that older adults will understand the importance of ROM exercises as an effort to maintain muscle strength, improve blood circulation, preserve joint flexibility, and prevent contractures and other complications caused by prolonged bedrest. In addition, nursing home staff are expected to assist and support the routine implementation of ROM exercises according to each older adult’s condition and needs.
This health education activity serves as a promotive and preventive effort to improve the quality of life of older adults. Through the education and demonstrations provided, it is hoped that older adults can maintain their functional abilities so that their physical health and independence can be better preserved.
This activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being. The activity enhances the knowledge and skills of older adults and nursing home staff in performing active and passive ROM exercises to maintain physical health, prevent complications due to bedrest, and improve the quality of life of older adults.
It is hoped that after participating in this activity, older adults and nursing home staff will be able to independently and routinely practice active and passive ROM exercises as part of daily care to maintain mobility and prevent complications caused by immobility.
