Writing for Mental Health: Expressive Writing as a Stress Management Strategy

NERS NEWS — On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Professional Nursing students of Batch B27 in the Mental Health Nursing rotation conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) activity themed “Writing for Mental Health: Expressive Writing as a Stress Management Strategy” at Puri Anggrek Ward, Rumah Sakit Menur, Surabaya. This activity was attended by patients receiving treatment in Puri Anggrek Ward as part of efforts to improve mental health.

Through this educational activity, students provided education on the importance of recognizing stress, the impact of stress on physical and mental health, and the benefits of expressive writing as a simple technique to help manage emotions. Students also guided participants in practicing free writing about their experiences, thoughts, and feelings as a medium for expressing emotions in a healthy way. During the activity, participants showed strong enthusiasm by actively following each stage of the session, engaging in discussions, and sharing their experiences regarding how they cope with stress in daily life.

This educational activity was successfully conducted under the supervision of Academic Advisor Rizky Fitriyasari, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., and Clinical Supervisor Ika Febriyanti, S.Kep., Ns. The activity aimed to improve patients’ knowledge and skills in independently managing stress through expressive writing techniques. It is expected to help reduce emotional burdens, enhance self-awareness of feelings, and support continuous mental health recovery.

This PKRS activity supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, which focuses on improving health and well-being, including mental health, through promotive, preventive, and educational efforts in healthcare facilities. In addition, this activity reflects Universitas Airlangga’s commitment to fulfilling the tri dharma of higher education through community service and improving healthcare quality. This contribution aligns with Universitas Airlangga’s recent achievement in the QS World University Rankings, which placed the university at #287 globally.

This achievement serves as motivation for students to continue contributing to improving public health through innovative, evidence-based educational activities that are oriented toward patients’ needs.

This activity is expected to encourage patients to be more open in expressing their feelings, increase self-confidence, and build sustainable positive habits as part of efforts to maintain mental health and improve quality of life.
