NERS NEWS — On Friday, June 19, 2026, the activity “Guess the Emotional Expression: Recognizing and Expressing Feelings” was conducted in the Puri Anggrek Ward of Menur Hospital, Surabaya. The activity began at 9:00 a.m. and continued until completion, targeting psychiatric patients receiving treatment in the Puri Anggrek Ward. The activity focused on Group Activity Therapy (GAT) in recognizing and expressing feelings as an effort to improve patients’ ability to understand and express their emotions appropriately.
The activity began with an opening session, introductions, and an explanation of the objectives to all participants. Next, the facilitator provided a brief explanation of the various emotions commonly experienced in daily life and the importance of recognizing every emotion that arises. Participants were then invited to take part in the “Guess the Emotional Expression” game, in which they observed different facial expressions and identified the emotions being displayed. Participants were also given the opportunity to share personal experiences related to emotions they had experienced, allowing them to learn how to better recognize and express their feelings.
Throughout the activity, participants showed great enthusiasm and actively participated in every session. Most participants were able to recognize basic emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and surprise, and were also able to express feelings they had experienced in the past. The interaction between participants and facilitators was positive, creating a comfortable, communicative, and enjoyable atmosphere. Overall, the activity was carried out according to plan without significant obstacles, enabling the objectives of the group activity therapy in helping patients recognize and express their emotions to be achieved successfully.
One participant shared their impression after taking part in the activity: “I enjoyed participating in this activity. Today I learned that everyone has different kinds of feelings, and it’s okay to express them. I feel more confident about sharing my experiences, and I hope there will be more activities like this because they make me feel more motivated.”
This report is prepared as documentation of the implementation of the “Guess the Emotional Expression: Recognizing and Expressing Feelings” activity in the Puri Anggrek Ward of Menur Hospital, Surabaya. It is hoped that group activity therapy programs like this can continue to be conducted regularly as part of psychosocial rehabilitation efforts for patients. Through interactive and enjoyable activities, patients are expected to become increasingly able to recognize, express, and manage their emotions adaptively, thereby improving their communication skills, social interactions, and supporting their mental health recovery process optimally.
