NERS NEWS – Surabaya, July 9, 2026 – In commemoration of National Children’s Day 2026, the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, in collaboration with Universitas Airlangga Hospital and the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) of Universitas Airlangga Hospital, organized a community service program entitled “Optimizing Preschool Children’s Growth and Development through Education and Developmental Screening in Commemoration of National Children’s Day 2026: Protected Children, Advanced Indonesia.” The program aimed to enhance parents’ knowledge of child growth and developmental stimulation while providing early developmental screening for preschool-aged children.

The event began with a Coloring Competition for children aged 4–6 years, organized by the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) of Universitas Airlangga Hospital. The atmosphere was lively and cheerful, with enthusiastic participation from the children as they showcased their creativity and artistic talents using crayons and colored pencils.
While the children participated in the competition, their parents attended an educational session on the growth and development of preschool-aged children (4–6 years). The session was delivered by Dr. Kristiawati, S.Kp., M.Kep., Ns.Sp.Kep.An., a lecturer in Pediatric Nursing at the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga. During the session, participants gained valuable insights into the stages of child growth and development, the importance of age-appropriate developmental stimulation, and the essential role of families in supporting children’s optimal development.
The educational program continued with an interactive discussion and question-and-answer session moderated by Prof. Dr. Yuni Sufyanti Arief, S.Kp., M.Kes. Parents actively participated by asking questions regarding child development, parenting practices, and early detection strategies for developmental delays.
After the coloring competition concluded and while awaiting the announcement of the winners, all participating children underwent developmental screening using the Pre-Screening Developmental Questionnaire (Kuesioner Pra Skrining Perkembangan/KPSP) as an early detection measure to assess their developmental milestones. The screening was conducted directly by the Pediatric Nursing faculty team from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, consisting of Prof. Dr. Yuni Sufyanti Arief, S.Kp., M.Kes.; Dr. Kristiawati, S.Kp., M.Kep., Ns.Sp.Kep.An.; Dr. Ilya Krisnana, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep.; Dr. Praba Diyan Rachmawati, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep.; and Nuzul Qur’aniati, S.Kep., Ns., M.Ng., Ph.D. Through this screening, parents received an overview of their children’s developmental status along with recommendations for appropriate developmental stimulation activities that could be implemented at home based on the screening results.
The entire program was carried out successfully in a vibrant and enthusiastic atmosphere. Participants demonstrated high levels of engagement throughout the educational sessions, discussions, and developmental screening activities. The event concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the speakers and collaborating partners, followed by the announcement of the coloring competition winners and the presentation of prizes.
Through this community service initiative, the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, together with Universitas Airlangga Hospital and the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) of Universitas Airlangga Hospital, hopes to raise public awareness of the importance of monitoring children’s growth and development from an early age. This collaboration among healthcare institutions, educational institutions, and families is expected to contribute to the development of a healthy, intelligent, and high-quality Indonesian generation, in line with the spirit of National Children’s Day 2026, “Protected Children, Advanced Indonesia.”
