NERS NEWS — Surabaya, May 9, 2026 — Mental health recovery is not solely about prescriptions or a series of medical therapies provided in clinical settings. Behind every patient’s recovery lies one of the most powerful yet often overlooked factors: warmth, acceptance, and support within the family.
To promote this important message, the Jatayu 1 Group of Nursing Professional Program students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga organized an interactive Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) session entitled “Great Family, Better Recovery” at the Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic of Prof. Dr. Moeljono Hospital, Surabaya, on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
Recovery Is More Than Treatment, It Is About Acceptance and Humanity
Using educational leaflets and posters, the nursing students discussed the challenges frequently experienced by individuals living with mental illness, including stigma, social exclusion, and treatment discontinuation. Through an empathetic educational session, families were encouraged to recognize their vital role as the patient’s primary caregivers and strongest support system throughout the recovery process.
Medication is essential, but hugs, simple words of appreciation, and a safe home environment are equally important in preventing relapse,” the education team emphasized to the participating families.
Participants were encouraged to avoid blame, shame, and discrimination. Instead, they were equipped with practical strategies to support their loved ones, including:
- Recognizing early warning signs of relapse, such as sleep disturbances, sudden mood changes, and hallucinations.
- Encouraging medication adherence without being controlling or judgmental.
- Communicating with warmth, empathy, and active listening.
- Creating a safe, supportive, and stress-free home environment.
