NERS NEWS — Nursing Profession Program students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) session on tuberculosis (TB) prevention for patients’ family members in the waiting area of ICU 5B2 Graha Trimed, Universitas Airlangga Hospital, on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The activity aimed to enhance families’ understanding of tuberculosis, its modes of transmission, and preventive measures that can be applied in daily life.
Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the major infectious diseases in Indonesia. Since TB is transmitted through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks, it is essential for patients’ families to understand effective preventive measures. Health education serves as one of the key promotive and preventive strategies to help break the chain of disease transmission.

As part of the nursing profession’s role in improving public health, Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Group 2, organized a PKRS session entitled “Prevent Tuberculosis Transmission, Stay Alert” in the waiting area of ICU 5B2 Graha Trimed, Universitas Airlangga Hospital. The activity began at 9:00 a.m. and employed interactive lectures, discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and demonstrations of proper coughing techniques using educational leaflets.
Throughout the session, participants demonstrated great enthusiasm. Family members actively engaged in the educational activities, asked questions, and participated in the effective coughing demonstration. During the evaluation session, participants were able to explain how TB is transmitted, identify preventive measures, and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of wearing masks, practicing proper cough etiquette, and adhering to TB treatment regimens.

This activity also supported the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by promoting the prevention of infectious diseases and improving community health, as well as SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing accessible and understandable health education for patients’ families. It is expected that, after attending the session, participants will apply TB prevention practices both at home and in their communities, thereby reducing the risk of disease transmission.
Through this health education program, it is hoped that families of patients in ICU 5B2 Graha Trimed will gain a better understanding of tuberculosis, practice proper cough etiquette, wear masks correctly, and support treatment adherence among individuals with TB. This activity reflects the commitment of Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga to improving public health knowledge and contributing to tuberculosis prevention efforts.
