NERS NEWS — On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity in the Waiting Room of the Internal Medicine (IPD) Polyclinic at Rumah Sakit Khusus Infeksi (RSKI) Universitas Airlangga Surabaya. The activity carried the theme “Education on Diabetic Neuropathy Prevention through Diabetic Foot Exercises” and targeted patients and their families who were waiting for services at the IPD Polyclinic. The activity aimed to increase participants’ knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus, diabetic neuropathy complications, and the importance of prevention through proper foot care and regular diabetic foot exercises. This objective was in accordance with the SAP prepared for the education session, namely enabling participants to understand Diabetes Mellitus, diabetic neuropathy, the purpose of prevention, and how to perform diabetic foot exercises.
The activity began with an opening by the moderator, who greeted the participants, introduced the education team, explained the purpose of the session, established the time agreement, and assessed participants’ initial knowledge of Diabetes Mellitus and diabetic neuropathy. The presenter then delivered the material through an interactive lecture covering the definition of Diabetes Mellitus, the definition of diabetic neuropathy, early signs and symptoms of neuropathy, prevention of diabetic neuropathy, and the benefits of diabetic foot exercises as a form of physical exercise that can help improve blood circulation and prevent complications in the feet of people with diabetes. Following the presentation, the activity continued with an active discussion and question-and-answer session, during which participants enthusiastically asked questions about foot care and Diabetes Mellitus management. All participants also received leaflets as educational materials that could be used as a guide at home. The activity followed the methods and sequence outlined in the SAP, namely lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and the use of posters and leaflets.

As part of the education, Nursing Profession students demonstrated diabetic foot exercises and invited all participants to practice each movement directly. Based on the activity documentation, participants followed the demonstration well, including exercises using newspaper as a medium to train muscle strength, movement coordination, joint flexibility, and improve blood circulation in the lower extremities. The activity took place in a conducive and interactive atmosphere, with participants paying attention to the presenter’s explanation, reading the distributed leaflets, and following instructions throughout the demonstration. The diabetic foot exercise demonstration was one of the main materials included in the education SAP.
Overall, the PKRS activity was carried out smoothly according to plan. Participants followed the activity in an orderly manner, actively participated in the discussion session, and were able to answer several evaluation questions regarding the definition of Diabetes Mellitus, diabetic neuropathy, the purpose of preventing diabetic neuropathy, and the benefits of diabetic foot exercises. Participants were also able to perform the diabetic foot exercise movements properly according to the presenter’s instructions. Through this activity, patients and their families are expected to be able to independently practice diabetic foot exercises as one of the efforts to prevent diabetic neuropathy and complications of Diabetes Mellitus, thereby improving the quality of life of people with diabetes.
