NERS NEWS — (Saturday, July 25, 2026) — Students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, namely Talitha Maulia Nada (A24), Muhammad Rayhan Ricardi Sudrajat (A23), and Sandrina Humairah (A23), conducted a site survey on Oshima Island as part of the Student Outbound program at the Japanese Red Cross Kyushu International College of Nursing (JRCKICN). The activity aimed to prepare for the implementation of a disaster preparedness education program while gaining an understanding of the local environment and characteristics of the community.
During the activity, the students, together with students from JRCKICN, inspected the locations that would be used for the program. In addition to observing the environmental conditions, the students also ensured the readiness of the venue, activity flow, and various technical aspects to support the smooth implementation of the educational program with the Oshima Island community.
The activity continued with a field visit accompanied by a local resident who guided the participants around the island by car to several locations that had previously been affected by disasters. Through the explanations provided, the students gained an overview of the impacts of disasters that had occurred on Oshima Island, the mitigation efforts that had been implemented, and the importance of community preparedness in facing potential disasters in the future. This experience provided practical insight into the implementation of community-based disaster management in Japan.
Through this site survey, the students not only gained an understanding of the geographical and social conditions of the Oshima Island community but also strengthened their observation skills, cross-cultural communication, and collaboration in designing an educational program suited to the community’s needs. This experience served as important preparation before the community service activity was conducted the following day.
The activity also contributed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through strengthening community disaster preparedness; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, through learning about community resilience in facing disasters; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration among the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, the Japanese Red Cross Kyushu International College of Nursing, and the Oshima Island community.
