NERS NEWS — Group 1 of the Community Health Nursing Rotation, Nursing Profession Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Education activity with the theme “Recognize Hypertension: A Silent Killer Disease to Be Aware Of” for patients and patients’ families at Kenjeran Community Health Center, Surabaya City, on Thursday (September 10, 2026). This activity aimed to increase participants’ understanding of hypertension as well as efforts to prevent and control it in daily life.

The activity was conducted through material presentation, discussions, and question-and-answer sessions using leaflets and posters as media. The material was presented by Salsabilla Widyaningtyas and Alifiah Nabila Rahardi, while Vina Rohmatak served as the moderator. The education was delivered interactively so that participants could understand information about hypertension and apply it in their daily lives.

The material provided covered the definition and classification of hypertension, causes and risk factors, signs and dangers to be aware of, ways to manage hypertension, as well as myths and facts about hypertension. Participants were also provided with an understanding of the importance of having their blood pressure checked regularly and consulting healthcare professionals if repeated examinations showed high blood pressure.

During this activity, students encouraged participants to make various efforts to control hypertension through a healthy lifestyle, such as reducing salt consumption, increasing fruit and vegetable intake, limiting fatty foods, engaging in regular physical activity, quitting smoking, managing stress, maintaining body weight, and having their blood pressure checked regularly. Participants were also provided with an understanding that hypertension can occur without symptoms, so regular check-ups remain important.

This PKRS activity was a form of contribution by Nursing Profession students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, to improving the health literacy of patients and families. This activity was in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through efforts to increase public awareness in preventing and controlling non-communicable diseases, as well as SDG 4: Quality Education through the provision of health education to the community.

Through this activity, patients and families are expected to increase their awareness of hypertension risk factors, have their blood pressure checked regularly, and implement a healthy lifestyle as part of efforts to prevent hypertension complications. This activity is also expected to become part of the students’ ongoing contribution to providing health education to the community.
