NERS NEWS — Nursing Profession Education Program students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Batch 49, Group 13, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity entitled “The Right Steps to Prevent Surgical Wound Infections” for families accompanying patients in the Grha Trimed Operating Room Waiting Room, Surabaya, on Friday, September 11, 2026. The activity, which began at 1:00 p.m. WIB, was conducted through approximately 30 minutes of health education using lecture and question-and-answer methods, with leaflets as educational media. The activity aimed to increase families’ knowledge and involvement in helping prevent surgical wound infections in patients.
The PKRS activity was conducted by Young Nurses of Group 13, Batch 49, by providing education to families accompanying patients regarding the importance of preventing surgical wound infections. The materials presented included the definition of infection, signs and symptoms of infection, causes, complications, as well as steps to prevent surgical wound infections. Participants were also given the opportunity to discuss and ask questions to the presenter so that the information provided could be understood and applied in supporting patient care.
This activity involved Young Nurses of the Nursing Profession Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Batch 49, Group 13, the Grha Trimed Operating Room, and families accompanying patients as participants. The activity was held on Friday, September 11, 2026, in the Grha Trimed Operating Room Waiting Room, from 1:00 p.m. WIB until completion. The implementation of this activity was part of the Hospital Health Promotion activities conducted by Young Nurses while undergoing Nursing Profession Education Practice.
Prevention of surgical wound infections is important because surgical procedures cause disruption of tissue continuity, putting patients at risk of infection during the recovery period. Surgical wound infections can prolong the treatment process and increase the burden of patient care. Therefore, prevention efforts are not only the responsibility of healthcare professionals but also require the involvement of patients and families, particularly in maintaining cleanliness, assisting with patients’ nutritional needs, preventing wound contamination, and recognizing signs of infection.
Through this PKRS activity, Young Nurses of Group 13 hoped that patients’ families could increase their knowledge and play an active role in supporting patient care after surgery. Families are expected to be able to implement infection prevention measures and recognize signs and symptoms of infection so that they can immediately report them to healthcare professionals if they are found. With good family involvement, the patient’s recovery process is expected to proceed optimally with a lower risk of infection.
The “The Right Steps to Prevent Surgical Wound Infections” PKRS activity was one form of contribution by Young Nurses of Group 13, Batch 49, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, in providing health education to patients’ families. Through simple, interactive, and applicable education, this activity is expected to increase families’ readiness to support patient care and encourage the proper implementation of infection prevention behaviors.
