“Let’s Wash Our Hands and Stay Healthy!” Education and Demonstration of the Six-Step Handwashing Technique as an Effort to Promote Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors (PHBS) among Elementary School Students by Unair Nursing Students

NERS NEWS — Surabaya, September 12, 2026 — Students of the Nursing Professional Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Cohort B27, Community and Family Nursing Rotation, Wave 2, conducted an educational and demonstration activity entitled “Let’s Wash Our Hands and Stay Healthy!” on Saturday (September 12, 2026). The activity was held at MI Ribath Darut Tauhid Kedung Cowek, Bulak, Surabaya, and targeted first- and second-grade students.

The activity, which began at 8:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), focused on Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors (PHBS), particularly the importance of washing hands with soap and running water and practicing the correct six-step handwashing technique. This activity was part of the learning process in Community and Family Nursing and aimed to improve students’ knowledge and skills in practicing clean and healthy living behaviors from an early age.

The activity began with a presentation on the six-step handwashing technique using simple and communicative language adapted to the students’ characteristics. The Unair Nursing students provided an understanding of the importance of maintaining hand hygiene and developing the habit of washing hands with soap and running water, particularly at important times such as before eating and after performing certain activities.

Following the presentation, the activity continued with a demonstration of the correct six-step handwashing technique. The students demonstrated each step directly and sequentially, allowing the students to observe and understand the movements more easily. The demonstration method was chosen so that students would not only gain theoretical knowledge but also be able to practice proper handwashing independently.

The students were then given the opportunity to participate in a simulation and directly practice the handwashing steps that had been demonstrated. The activity took place in an interactive and enjoyable atmosphere. The students showed enthusiasm by actively following the movements, answering questions, and participating throughout the demonstration.

As an evaluation, the activity concluded with a question-and-answer session to assess the students’ understanding of the material presented. The students were asked simple questions about the benefits of handwashing, the use of soap and running water, and the six steps of handwashing. Students were also given the opportunity to repeat the information they had learned during the activity.

Through this health education activity, Unair Nursing students hope that the students will be able to apply proper handwashing habits in their daily lives. Introducing the importance of the six-step handwashing technique from school age is expected to serve as an initial step in developing clean and healthy living habits while increasing children’s awareness of the importance of maintaining personal and environmental health.
