Universitas Airlangga Nursing Students Hold Handwashing with Soap Education for School-Age Children in Dukuh Sutorejo

NERS NEWS — Nursing Professional Education students from Universitas Airlangga, Wave 2, Groups 1, 2, and 3, Community and Family Nursing Rotation, working in the area of Kalijudan Community Health Center, conducted a health promotion activity entitled “CETAR: Wash Your Hands Properly and Regularly” on Friday (September 11) at the Thoriqul Jannah Mosque TPQ, RW 07, Dukuh Sutorejo. The activity, which began at 6:00 p.m. and continued until completion, targeted school-age children at the Thoriqul Jannah Mosque TPQ. A total of 25 children participated enthusiastically and actively throughout the health education session.

During the activity, the students delivered materials on the definition of handwashing, the benefits of washing hands with soap, appropriate times to wash hands, and the consequences of improper handwashing. Participants were also educated on the six steps of Handwashing with Soap (CTPS), which can be applied in daily life. The materials were delivered using simple language adapted to the participants’ age to make them easier to understand.

The activity was conducted interactively through a presentation, question-and-answer session, and hands-on practice. The children showed enthusiasm when given the opportunity to answer questions about the benefits of handwashing and appropriate times to wash their hands. During the practice session, the students invited all participants to practice the six steps of handwashing with soap together while accompanied by a song. The children followed the handwashing movements in sequence while singing, making the practice more enjoyable and helping participants remember each step of Handwashing with Soap (CTPS).

This Handwashing with Soap (CTPS) education activity represented one form of the nursing students’ role in promoting health within the community, particularly among school-age children. The activity also supported the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3, Good Health and Well-being, through efforts to promote clean and healthy living behaviors and prevent disease transmission. Education and hands-on practice of Handwashing with Soap from school age are expected to help establish personal hygiene habits that can be sustainably applied in daily life.
