NERS NEWS — Surabaya, (24/9) — Group 8 of the Nurse Professional Program during their Medical-Surgical Nursing (KMB) rotation held a health education session titled “Chest Clapping Exercises and Proper Positioning for More Comfortable Breathing” at IRNA 3A GRHA TRIMED, Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA). The activity aimed to educate and provide simple practical training to patients and their families on techniques that help optimize secretion clearance and improve breathing comfort.
The session began with a presentation on the importance of maintaining airway clearance, particularly for patients with secretion buildup. Participants were introduced to the chest clapping technique (percussion), a component of chest physiotherapy performed using cupped hands to deliver light percussion to targeted chest areas. This technique was then demonstrated and practiced directly, highlighting correct positioning and proper execution.
In addition to chest clapping exercises, participants learned about body positions that facilitate easier breathing, such as the semi-Fowler’s position and sitting upright while leaning slightly forward. Participants were guided to understand that optimal positioning allows the chest to expand more effectively, making breathing significantly more comfortable.
This activity aimed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of patients and their families in performing simple actions that support respiratory comfort. The education was delivered interactively through explanations, demonstrations, and hands-on practice, enabling participants to easily grasp each step and stay aware of key precautions during the exercise.
Through the “Chest Clapping Exercises and Proper Positioning for More Comfortable Breathing” initiative, Group 8 Nurse Professional Students played an active role in providing health-promoting and preventive education to patients and families. This program aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by empowering individuals with the knowledge and ability to maintain respiratory health.
Through this initiative, patients and their families are expected to understand the importance of maintaining airway clearance as well as proper body positioning and techniques to enhance breathing comfort. When executed correctly, these simple practices and educational insights support patient care and foster greater awareness of respiratory health.
