Unair Nursing Students Conduct PKRS ROM Exercise Program for Stroke Patients

NERS NEWS — Surabaya — Students of the Professional Nursing Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity themed Range of Motion (ROM) Exercises for stroke patients and their families on Friday, February 20, 2026, at IRNA 5A Graha Trimed Room, Universitas Airlangga Hospital. The activity aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) and the importance of ROM exercises as part of rehabilitation to prevent complications and improve patients’ quality of life.

The activity was carried out through a material presentation, distribution of educational leaflets, live demonstrations of ROM exercises, and an interactive question-and-answer session. The materials covered the definition of stroke, types of CVA, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and the potential impacts if not managed properly. In addition, the students explained the benefits of ROM exercises in preventing joint stiffness, maintaining muscle strength, improving blood circulation, and supporting the recovery of motor function. The demonstration of movements was conducted systematically on both upper and lower extremities with facilitator guidance to ensure participants understood the correct and safe techniques.

This activity was organized by Group 7 of the Basic Nursing Practice (PKD) Clinical Rotation, Professional Nursing Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, and was attended by 12 participants consisting of patients and their family members. The session began at 08:40 AM (WIB) and continued until completion, under the supervision of academic and clinical preceptors. Participants showed great enthusiasm, as reflected in their active involvement during the demonstrations and Q&A session.

The activity was initiated in response to the high incidence of stroke, which poses a risk of long-term disability if not accompanied by early rehabilitation. ROM exercises serve as a simple yet effective intervention to maintain joint mobility and prevent contractures in stroke patients. Through this educational initiative, the students hope that family members will play an active role in supporting the patient’s recovery process continuously, both during hospitalization and after discharge.

One of the presenters, Nurul Hidayah, emphasized the crucial role of family involvement in stroke rehabilitation. “Stroke may not always be fully cured, but with regular ROM exercises performed using proper techniques, muscle and joint function can be maintained, leading to an improved quality of life for patients,” she stated.

This PKRS activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being through promotive and rehabilitative efforts in healthcare facilities, and SDG 4: Quality Education through the implementation of practice-based learning for professional nursing students. Through collaboration between the educational institution and the hospital, this activity further strengthens synergy in enhancing the quality of healthcare services.

Through this initiative, the Professional Nursing Program students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, demonstrate their commitment to integrating education, service, and community engagement. It is hoped that similar activities will continue to be carried out sustainably to improve the health literacy of patients’ families and contribute meaningfully to the achievement of sustainable development goals in the health sector.
