NERS NEWS – Surabaya, February 20, 2026. Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity at Universitas Airlangga Hospital. The event centered on the theme “Prevention and Management of Tuberculosis (TB) in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM).” This initiative aimed to enhance the understanding of patients, families, and hospital visitors regarding the close link between TB and DM, which can worsen health conditions if not managed optimally.

During the activity, students provided education on risk factors, signs and symptoms of TB in DM patients, the importance of medication adherence, healthy lifestyles, and blood sugar control. The education was delivered through direct counseling in the outpatient waiting room, distribution of informative leaflets, and interactive Q&A sessions.

The leader of the nursing student team explained that patients with Diabetes Mellitus face a higher risk of contracting TB due to a weakened immune system. Therefore, early detection and integrated management of both diseases are crucial to preventing more severe complications.

Furthermore, the students emphasized the importance of implementing Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS), consuming a balanced nutritious diet, adhering to routine check-ups, and the mandatory use of masks for active TB patients to prevent further transmission.

This PKRS activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – Supporting efforts to end the TB epidemic and controlling non-communicable diseases like Diabetes Mellitus.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education – Providing health education that improves public literacy regarding TB and DM.
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – Fostering collaboration between educational institutions and hospitals to improve public health standards.

Through this activity, it is hoped that the public will better understand the importance of preventing and controlling TB in DM patients, thereby significantly reducing complication and transmission rates.
