NERS NEWS – Surabaya, February 27, 2026. Students from the Professional Nursing Education Program (Batch B27, Medical-Surgical Nursing Group 1) at the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, held a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity at the Universitas Airlangga Hospital. The event, titled “RAWAT (Early Response, Alert, and Anticipation of Surgical Site Infection Signs),” took place in the waiting area of Surgical Clinics A & B and the BPJS Clinic. This initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of patients and their families regarding post-operative wound care and infection prevention through direct education and practical demonstrations.
The program utilized several methods, including lectures, interactive discussions, and live demonstrations, supported by posters and leaflets to ensure the material was easily understood and applicable. Key topics covered included the definition of surgical site infections (SSI), causes and risk factors, signs and symptoms of infection, proper wound care techniques, and maintaining wound hygiene and sterility. The session was attended by more than 29 participants, predominantly patients and their families visiting the Surgical Clinic for wound treatments. The activity commenced at 09:00 AM WIB on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the Universitas Airlangga Hospital.
The primary objective of this PKRS activity was to increase the awareness and independence of patients and their families in performing self-care at home to prevent post-operative infections, particularly for high-risk patients such as those with diabetes mellitus. Through these promotive and preventive efforts, the students aim to support the reduction of infection rates in the surgical wards of Universitas Airlangga Hospital. This initiative also represents a contribution toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4: Quality Education, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
The program was conducted under the clinical supervision of Rizki Putri K., S.Kep., Ns., and academic supervision by Prof. Dr. Tintin Sukartini, S.Kp., M.Kes. Participant enthusiasm was evident through active engagement during the Q&A session, involvement in the wound care demonstration, and a brief evaluation at the end of the event. Through this activity, the Faculty of Nursing students at Universitas Airlangga hope that patients and their families will be able to implement correct wound care practices, thereby minimizing infection risks and improving the quality of post-operative recovery.
