NERS NEWS — Group 4 of the Professional Nursing Program (B27), Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) session on Tuberculosis (TB) Transmission Prevention on Thursday, February 26, 2026, in the IRNA 4A discussion room, Graha Trimed, Infectious Disease Hospital of Universitas Airlangga. This activity was aimed at patients’ families as an effort to strengthen their role in breaking the chain of TB transmission.
During the session, it was explained that TB is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which spreads through droplets released when a person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. Participants received education on the signs and symptoms of TB, including a cough lasting more than two weeks, fever, night sweats, weight loss, and the importance of early detection and treatment.
Through posters and leaflets themed “BEBAS TB,” participants were encouraged to implement preventive measures, summarized as:
B: Bin sputum properly (dispose of sputum in a closed container or soapy water)
E: Etiquette in coughing and sneezing (wear a mask, cover the mouth)
B: Bring in fresh air daily (open windows for ventilation and sunlight)
A: Adopt balanced nutrition (vegetables, fruits, protein, adequate rest)
S: Stop smoking and alcohol use (maintain healthy lungs)
T: Take TB medication as prescribed until completion (do not discontinue treatment)
B: Be proactive in seeking medical care if coughing persists for more than two weeks
The session was conducted interactively with a question-and-answer segment and a brief evaluation. It is hoped that through this education, patients’ families will actively support treatment adherence and help prevent TB transmission at home and in the community.
This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) in efforts to end the TB epidemic, SDG 4 (Quality Education) by improving public health literacy, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration with Universitas Airlangga Hospital.
