NERS NEWS, Surabaya — Group 5 of the Medical-Surgical Nursing (KMB) rotation from the Nursing Profession Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (FKp Unair), recently organized a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) program. Titled “Recognize TB: Prevent, Treat, and Protect the Family,” the session was held for patient companions and families in Ward IRNA 4A. This initiative aimed to bolster public awareness and knowledge regarding Tuberculosis (TB), an infectious disease that remains a significant global health challenge.
The educational session was conducted interactively, utilizing lectures, Q&A segments, and the distribution of educational leaflets. Students systematically presented materials covering the definition of TB, transmission mechanisms, warning signs and symptoms, risk factors, preventive measures, and the crucial role of families in supporting patient treatment. A strong emphasis was placed on medication adherence throughout the therapy period to ensure optimal recovery rates and prevent drug resistance.
This program was executed by Group 5 of the KMB rotation as part of their clinical practice requirements. Held directly within the inpatient ward (IRNA 4A), the session was supervised by clinical instructors to ensure the information delivered was accurate, targeted, and met nursing service standards.
The primary goal of this activity was to enhance the health literacy of patients’ families concerning TB, specifically regarding early symptom detection, household transmission prevention, and long-term treatment compliance. The initiative was prompted by the high incidence of TB in Indonesia, particularly among high-risk groups such as individuals with diabetes mellitus, active smokers, and those with compromised immune systems. This effort serves as a concrete contribution toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through infectious disease prevention and control.
A representative from Group 5 shared their aspirations for the attendees:
“We hope that patient families become more proactive and understand that TB is curable if managed correctly. With the right knowledge, early detection, and strong family support, we can collectively break the chain of TB transmission and protect our loved ones.” — Representative of Group 5, KMB Rotation, FKp Unair
This PKRS activity aligns with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being — Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages through the prevention, early detection, and control of infectious diseases like Tuberculosis.
- SDG 4: Quality Education — Enhancing public health literacy through evidence-based education delivered by trained nursing students.
- SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals — Strengthening partnerships between nursing educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and the community to achieve optimal health standards.
The TB prevention education program organized by Group 5 has delivered a tangible positive impact, increasing the knowledge and concern of patient families regarding the dangers of Tuberculosis. With guidance from clinical instructors and high participant enthusiasm, the event was effective in conveying comprehensive health messages.
Moving forward, the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga is expected to continue promoting similar health promotion programs. This reflects the institution’s social responsibility in improving public health standards, supporting community-based nursing education, and actively contributing to the achievement of global health SDGs.
