NERS NEWS — On Friday, March 13, 2024, at 10:00 AM WIB, a health education session was conducted with the topic Prevention of Tuberculosis (TB) Transmission and the subtopic the 3M Movement (Handwashing, Wearing Masks, and Practicing Cough Etiquette). The activity took place in the IRNA 4A Graha Trimed Ward, RSKI Universitas Airlangga, targeting family members who were accompanying patients.
This health education session was organized by Ners Muda students of the Professional Nursing Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Batch B27. The activity began with the delivery of educational material about TB, including its definition, modes of transmission, and preventive measures through the 3M movement. The material was presented in a simple manner to ensure it was easily understood by the participants.
During the activity, the participants appeared very enthusiastic. This was evident during the six-step handwashing practice session, where participants actively followed each step demonstrated by the presenters. Participants were also enthusiastic when asked to recall the TB prevention methods through the 3M movement. Several participants were able to answer correctly.
During the discussion session, one participant, Mrs. Yani, asked about how to prevent TB transmission to her grandchild, who often plays with his uncle who is currently suffering from TB. The presenters explained that TB patients should wear masks, practice proper cough etiquette, maintain good home ventilation, and limit close contact, especially with children, until the treatment progresses and the condition becomes safer.
This health education activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, which aims to reduce the prevalence of infectious diseases, including TB, and increase public awareness of the importance of disease prevention.
Overall, the health education activity ran smoothly, interactively, and received positive responses from the participants. It is hoped that through this activity, the families accompanying patients will better understand how to prevent TB transmission and be able to apply these practices in their daily lives, thereby helping to reduce the spread of TB in the community.
