NERS NEWS – The atmosphere in the IRNA 5A inpatient ward of Graha Trimed on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 10:00 to 10:45 AM became more interactive with the implementation of a health education session on hypertension. This activity was part of the clinical practice of Nursing students aimed at increasing patients’ and families’ understanding of the importance of preventing and controlling hypertension.
The education session carried the theme “Controlled Living Without Hypertension” by introducing the JAGA method, a simple approach designed to help the community adopt healthy lifestyle habits to prevent hypertension. The JAGA method consists of Jauhi rokok (Avoid smoking), Atur pola makan seimbang (Maintain a balanced diet), Gerak rutin (Exercise regularly), and Awasi berat badan (Monitor body weight). Through this method, patients are expected to understand practical steps that can be applied in their daily lives to maintain stable blood pressure.
During the main session, the students delivered material regarding the definition of hypertension, risk factors, warning signs and symptoms, and the potential complications if hypertension is not properly controlled. In addition, the students emphasized the importance of adopting healthy lifestyle habits, such as reducing salt intake, engaging in regular physical activity, and monitoring body weight regularly as part of hypertension prevention efforts.
The activity was conducted in several stages, beginning with an orientation phase to create a comfortable atmosphere, followed by the delivery of educational material using leaflet media, and concluding with an evaluation stage through discussion and question-and-answer sessions with patients and their families. In this activity, the students acted as facilitators by presenting the material in simple and easily understandable language.
This educational activity was also attended by the academic supervisor Dr. Andri Setia Wahyudi, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep. and the clinical supervisor Ari Kusumandani, S.Kep., Ns., who provided guidance and support throughout the implementation of the program.
During the session, patients and their families showed strong interest in the material presented. One patient shared that after participating in the session, they better understood the importance of maintaining a healthy diet and reducing smoking habits in order to keep their blood pressure under control.
Through this activity, it is hoped that patients and their families will gain a better understanding of how to prevent and control hypertension through the consistent application of healthy lifestyle practices. Additionally, the program also serves as a valuable learning opportunity for students to develop their health education skills in delivering promotive and preventive care within healthcare settings.
