NERS NEWS – Surabaya – Students of Group 8, Nursing Profession Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) program titled “Managing Nausea through Deep Breathing and Acupressure Techniques” on Friday, March 13, 2026. The event took place on the 5th Floor, Chemotherapy Ward of Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA), targeting patients undergoing chemotherapy and their accompanying families to provide knowledge on reducing nausea through non-pharmacological methods.
The educational activity was conducted using brief counseling, practical demonstrations, and discussion sessions. The material included explanations of the causes of nausea commonly experienced during chemotherapy, the benefits of deep breathing exercises to aid body relaxation, and specific acupressure techniques at certain pressure points to help alleviate nausea.
The session was attended by four chemotherapy patients and their family members. Starting at 09:00 AM WIB, the event proceeded in a conducive atmosphere. Participants were highly attentive and actively participated in the Q&A session, particularly regarding the correct procedure for deep breathing and identifying the exact acupressure points for self-administration.
Through this PKRS activity, it is hoped that patients and their families can understand simple, actionable steps to reduce nausea during chemotherapy, ensuring a more comfortable treatment process. Furthermore, this education aims to increase family involvement in patient care.
This health education initiative is an effort to enhance patient knowledge and awareness regarding symptom management during treatment, while simultaneously improving their quality of life. This activity also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by improving public health literacy.
It is expected that after participating in this session, patients and families will be able to independently practice deep breathing and acupressure as a supportive way to manage nausea during chemotherapy cycles.
