NERS NEWS – Surabaya, March 13, 2026 — Professional Nursing Practice students from the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga, Batch B27 Group 15, once again demonstrated their contribution in supporting the Hospital Health Promotion Program (PKRS) through a health education activity titled “Infection Prevention in Hemodialysis Patients”, which was conducted in the Hemodialysis Unit of Universitas Airlangga Hospital.
This activity is part of the implementation of the professional nursing practice program, which not only focuses on providing nursing care but also emphasizes promotive and preventive efforts for patients and their families. The education aimed to increase patients’ knowledge and awareness about the importance of maintaining hygiene and proper care while undergoing hemodialysis therapy in order to prevent infections and more serious complications.
The educational session was conducted in the hemodialysis unit with patients and their families as the target participants. The methods used included brief health education, discussions, and an interactive question-and-answer session.
To support participants’ understanding, the students used educational media in the form of leaflets containing information about the definition of hemodialysis, risk factors for infection in hemodialysis patients, signs and symptoms of infection in vascular access, and simple steps that patients can take to prevent infection.
In addition to delivering the material, the students also explained the importance of maintaining hand hygiene, properly caring for the fistula or vascular access area, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle such as consuming nutritious food and adhering to the hemodialysis schedule determined by healthcare professionals. This education is expected to help patients understand how to independently care for their hemodialysis access at home.
During the activity, participants showed strong enthusiasm. Several patients and family members actively asked questions regarding vascular access care. The students provided direct explanations using simple language so that the information could be easily understood by the participants.
Furthermore, participants were also actively involved in answering questions posed by the students as part of an evaluation to assess their understanding of the material presented.
Through this PKRS activity, it is expected that patients and their families will better understand the importance of infection prevention in hemodialysis patients, be able to recognize early signs of infection, and apply proper care practices both at home and during therapy in the hospital.
