Universitas Airlangga Professional Nursing Students Conduct PKRS on CKD Awareness and Prevention in IRNA 5A Graha Trimed

NERS NEWS — A number of students from the Professional Nursing Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), Group 13, conducted a health education activity titled “Healthy Kidneys, Stronger Life: Recognize and Prevent CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease)”. The activity was held on Friday, March 13, 2026, at 10:00 AM WIB in the IRNA 5A Graha Trimed Ward, Universitas Airlangga Hospital.

This health education targeted family members accompanying patients in the ward. Considering the importance of early detection of CKD, this education aimed to help the community, especially patients’ families, understand the concept of chronic kidney disease and its preventive measures independently.

Understanding the Dangers of Chronic Kidney Disease

During the session, the presenters explained that Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a condition of kidney damage lasting for three months or more. This condition is progressive and irreversible, meaning the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter toxins from the blood and maintain fluid balance in the body.

Several major risk factors highlighted include:

• Diabetes and Hypertension: The two leading causes that damage kidney blood vessels

• Lifestyle Factors: Smoking habits, obesity, and unhealthy diet

• Age and Genetics: Individuals over 60 years old or those with a family history of similar diseases

Prevention and Management Efforts

The students emphasized the importance of a healthy lifestyle as the primary line of defense. “Early detection and proper management have been proven to slow disease progression and prevent more severe complications,” the team explained during the session.

• Regular monitoring of blood sugar and blood pressure

• Avoiding the use of medications or herbal remedies without medical supervision

• Quitting smoking and maintaining an ideal body weight

• Periodic kidney function tests (urea and creatinine), especially for high-risk individuals

Participant Enthusiasm

The session, moderated by Rimma Murti, with Rokhma Mista Febrianah and Rista Zulfidha Rindi as presenters, was conducted interactively. Participants not only listened to the material delivered through posters and leaflets but also actively engaged in discussions about warning signs such as severe shortness of breath and body swelling that require immediate medical attention.

This health education activity is expected to increase public awareness that although CKD cannot be completely cured, proper management can help maintain the quality of life for patients.
