NERS NEWS – Nursing students from groups C5 and C6 of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), implemented a clinical practice intervention program focused on cough etiquette and the importance of handwashing. The health education session was held for visitors at the Kenjeran Health Center (Puskesmas Kenjeran).

The activity took place on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the Kenjeran Health Center in Surabaya. The program was carried out by students from cohorts C5 and C6/A4 (Class of 2023) and was attended by various visitors at the facility.

The primary objective of this initiative was to increase public knowledge and awareness regarding the daily application of these hygiene practices, particularly within the family environment. The program was prompted by a perceived gap in community understanding concerning the benefits of proper cough etiquette and handwashing in preventing the spread of infectious diseases transmitted through droplets or the air. By improving these habits, the program aims to mitigate the risk of transmission among families and the local population, following the health guidelines set by healthcare professionals and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The team behind the event included Anggun Puspita Budiono and Gesti Okta Davina as Masters of Ceremony; Chantiqueqa Sekar and Argita Agnesia Moniz as speakers; Mellynda Selviana, Intan Ramadhani, and Ahmad Zainur Rahman as facilitators; and Zahra Nurila and Maulinda Intan Khoirunisa as observers. The activity was supervised by academic advisor Aziz Nashiruddin Habibie, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep. and clinical instructor Afif Lailil Huda, S.Kep., Ns.

This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being, which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages. It also supports SDG 4: Quality Education through the provision of structured health education.

The education session on cough etiquette and handwashing had a positive impact, effectively enhancing the patients’ and visitors’ understanding of personal hygiene. It is hoped that such educational activities will continue to be implemented sustainably in the future.
