NERS NEWS – Four students from the Bachelor of Nursing Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), conducted a health education session (PKRS) for patients’ families in the IRNA 3 Ward of Universitas Airlangga Hospital on Friday (27/2/2026). The activity raised the theme of early mobilization for post-operative patients as an effort to accelerate the recovery process.
During the session, the students provided education about early mobilization, which refers to movement activities carried out as early as possible even while the patient is still in bed. The material was delivered interactively through lectures and question-and-answer discussions, enabling participants to understand the importance of mobilization in helping speed up wound healing, improving respiratory function, and restoring the patient’s body functions optimally. In addition, participants were introduced to gradual stages of mobilization, starting from deep breathing exercises, changes in body position, to sitting and walking independently.
The activity was conducted by four students: Aufa Nur Aisyah Kurnianti, Bintang Diatas Sammudra, Titania Arum Dwi Kurniawati, and Moh Ali Imron. The education session took place in IRNA 3 Ward of Universitas Airlangga Hospital starting at 10:00 a.m. WIB, with the main target being families of post-operative patients who were accompanying their relatives. In its implementation, the students also utilized leaflet media to facilitate participants’ understanding.
Through this activity, the students hoped that patients’ families could play an active role in supporting early mobilization, thereby preventing various complications such as muscle stiffness and respiratory disorders. Furthermore, family support was considered an important factor in increasing patient motivation during the recovery period. This activity also became part of efforts to improve public health literacy while supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
With this education session, it is hoped that patients’ families will not only act as companions, but also become part of the care process. In the future, educational activities like this are expected to continue as a tangible contribution of students in improving the quality of healthcare services within the hospital environment.
