Smart Nursing Care: Effective Strategies for the Prevention and Healing of Pressure Ulcers

NERS NEWS – Group 3 of the Medical-Surgical Nursing Specialist Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a knowledge-sharing session titled “Smart Nursing Care: Effective Strategies for the Prevention and Healing of Pressure Ulcers.” This activity aimed to provide sustainable solutions in pressure ulcer management through a comprehensive approach. With such an approach, nursing care can improve service quality and reduce patients’ length of stay (LOS).

The activity was held on Friday, April 3, 2026, at Inpatient Ward 6A, Graha Trimed Surabaya. The event began with an opening speech from the group leader, followed by remarks from a representative of the nursing staff at IRNA 6A Graha Trimed Surabaya. The participants included staff nurses and nursing students from IRNA 6A Graha Trimed Surabaya. The session then continued with the main agenda, which was the presentation of materials delivered by members of Group 3.

During the session, updated management of pressure ulcer care was presented. The topics included the importance of regular wound assessment, scheduled repositioning for patients with pressure ulcers, the use of specialized mattresses equipped with automatic pressure-relief features, gentle repositioning without disturbing the patient’s sleep, adequate nutritional support, and modern wound care techniques aimed at reducing tissue stress to accelerate healing.

In addition, the speaker, Ns. Arif, emphasized the importance of a patient-centered approach through therapeutic communication and a caring attitude to enhance the effectiveness of healthcare services. This updated knowledge on pressure ulcer management can serve as a valuable reference for nurses in providing independent care as well as evidence-based education to patients.

Overall, the activity was conducted smoothly. The students not only experienced high enthusiasm and a warm response from fellow nurses and professional nursing students who participated in the event, but also gained valuable experience for their future professional development in nursing. It is hoped that similar activities will continue with updated knowledge on other areas of care, thereby increasing the university’s contribution to society and supporting the achievement of SDGs 3 and 4.
