NERS NEWS — Older adults in Block A of Griya Wreda Jambangan participated in a balance exercise education session on Saturday, May 2, 2026. The activity aimed to improve older adults’ knowledge and skills in performing balance exercises to prevent the risk of falls and enhance their quality of life.
The activity was conducted starting at 09.00 a.m. WIB at Block A of Griya Wreda Jambangan Surabaya. The educational session was delivered by Elmi and Alya as speakers, guided by Rina as the moderator, and assisted by other nursing students throughout the activity. During the session, participants received explanations regarding the definition of balance exercises, their health benefits, and the importance of exercise in reducing the risk of falls commonly experienced by older adults.
Before the practice session began, Nursing Profession students ensured that all participants were in good physical condition, not fatigued, and wearing non-slip footwear. After introducing themselves and explaining the objectives of the activity, the older adults were invited to participate in approximately 15 minutes of balance exercises with close supervision to ensure safety during practice.
The exercises included forward stepping, backward stepping, forward crossover, backward crossover, grapevine, and modified ladder drills. Each movement was performed alternately using the right and left foot for five counts. During the exercise session, participants were also given opportunities to rest whenever they felt tired.
After the exercises were completed, the Nursing Profession students conducted an evaluation by observing participants’ responses, measuring pulse rates, and asking about the participants’ feelings after completing the exercises. This activity is expected to help older adults improve body balance, reduce the risk of falls, and maintain independence in carrying out daily activities.
This activity supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being — improving older adults’ health and well-being through promotive and preventive efforts.
- SDG 4: Quality Education — providing health education that can be directly applied in daily life.
Through this balance exercise education activity, it is hoped that older adults in Block A of Griya Wreda Jambangan Surabaya will be able to routinely perform simple exercises to maintain body stability, reduce the risk of falls, and preserve independence in daily activities. This activity represents a concrete effort to improve the quality of life of older adults.
