NERS NEWS — Students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Class A2 Batch 2023, organized an Emergency Nursing Project-Based Learning (PjBL) activity themed “BERANI (Neat, Comfortable, and Intensive Splint Bandaging)” at SMAN 19 Surabaya on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 08:00 AM. This activity aimed to improve students’ knowledge and skills in providing first aid during emergency situations, particularly through education on Basic Life Support (BLS) and proper splint bandaging techniques. The BERANI theme emphasizes that helping others requires competence, where neat bandaging ensures that the wrap does not obstruct circulation, remains comfortable for the victim, and does not cause additional pain during the first-aid process.
This PjBL activity was carried out through an interactive learning approach involving material presentations, discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on practice of splint bandaging with the students of SMAN 19 Surabaya. The Class A2 Batch 2023 students actively contributed according to their respective roles throughout the activity. The BLS and splint bandaging materials were delivered verbally through PowerPoint presentations, covering the importance of BLS as an initial response in emergency conditions such as cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest, how to recognize emergency signs, correct chest compression procedures, as well as types of injuries, principles of initial management, and prevention of complications. The presenters emphasized that speed and accuracy in providing first aid are crucial in determining a victim’s survival before professional medical assistance arrives at the scene.

In addition to BLS, the splint bandaging demonstration session became one of the main highlights that attracted participants’ enthusiasm. The students directly demonstrated proper splint bandaging techniques, including how to select and prepare an appropriate splint according to the injured area, position the splint correctly to ensure optimal immobilization of fractures or injuries, apply bandages neatly without being too tight to avoid obstructing blood circulation, ensure the victim remains comfortable and does not experience additional pain due to bandaging, and recheck the distal area to ensure there is no circulation impairment after the bandage is applied. The high school students were then given the opportunity to practice the splint bandaging techniques in pairs under the guidance of the nursing students, allowing them to gain not only theoretical understanding but also practical skills.
The BERANI PjBL activity aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by promoting greater public awareness and preparedness in responding to health emergencies. Through this activity, Class A2 Batch 2023 students hope that the students of SMAN 19 Surabaya can become agents of change in their communities, not only having the courage to help others but also possessing the competence to do so properly, neatly, and safely. Educational activities like this are expected to continue developing and expanding their reach so that more young generations are prepared and responsive in facing emergency situations around them.
