Creativity as a Medium for Recovery: Nursing Profession Students of Universitas Airlangga Conduct Sensory Perception Stimulation Group Activity Therapy at Menur Mental Hospital

NERS NEWS — Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga conducted a Group Activity Therapy (TAK) for Sensory Perception Stimulation for patients in the Flamboyan Ward at Menur Mental Hospital Surabaya on Friday, June 19, 2026. The activity, which involved storytelling, drawing, and coloring, aimed to help patients express their feelings, improve interaction skills, and optimize sensory perception functions through creative and enjoyable activities.

As part of psychiatric nursing practice, Nursing Profession students of Batch B27 Group 1/D1 from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga organized a Group Activity Therapy (TAK) with the theme “Sensory Perception Stimulation: Drawing Therapy for Patients with Hallucinations” in the Flamboyan Ward at Menur Mental Hospital on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 9:30 AM. This activity was designed to provide patients with opportunities to express ideas, recognize emotions, and improve communication skills through drawing and storytelling.

Mental health disorders not only affect a person’s emotional condition but can also impact communication skills, social interaction, and the ability to express thoughts and feelings. Therefore, various therapeutic approaches are needed to provide positive stimulation while supporting the overall rehabilitation process of patients.

During the activity, participants were invited to draw and color based on their own creativity, then share and explain their artwork to other group members. This activity not only trained sensory perception and concentration skills but also encouraged patients to become more confident in expressing opinions and interacting with their surroundings. Participants appeared actively engaged in every stage of the therapy, from introducing themselves, getting to know other group members, expressing feelings, to explaining the drawings they created. The success of the activity was reflected in participants’ ability to actively participate and express themselves more effectively throughout the session.

In addition to providing therapeutic benefits for patients, this activity also served as an opportunity for students to directly apply psychiatric nursing knowledge in practice. Through creative and communicative approaches, the students aimed to create a supportive environment for patient recovery so they could optimally develop their social and emotional abilities. This activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) through efforts to improve mental health and patient well-being, as well as SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the implementation of education and therapy that encourage continuous individual development.

Through this Group Activity Therapy for Sensory Perception Stimulation, patients are expected to improve communication skills, social interaction, and the ability to express feelings positively through creative activities. This activity also represents a tangible contribution from Nursing Profession students of Universitas Airlangga in supporting the rehabilitation and mental health recovery process of patients at Menur Mental Hospital.
