NERS NEWS — Surabaya, July 9, 2026 – Group D1.3 students of the Professional Nursing Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) session entitled “Management of Premature Rupture of Membranes (PROM)” on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. The activity was held in the Verlos Kamer (VK) Waiting Area, 5th Floor, Universitas Airlangga Hospital, Surabaya, and was attended by family members waiting for relatives receiving care or undergoing childbirth in the VK unit.
The PKRS activity aimed to improve family members’ knowledge of Premature Rupture of Membranes (PROM) so they could better understand the condition, recognize appropriate management strategies, and identify warning signs requiring immediate medical attention. Educating family members is expected to strengthen their support for pregnant women experiencing PROM, thereby reducing the risk of complications for both the mother and the baby.
The session began with an opening by the moderator, followed by introductions of the student team and an explanation of the objectives of the health education program. Before presenting the material, the presenter assessed the participants’ prior knowledge by asking questions about PROM. The educational content was then delivered systematically using PowerPoint slides and leaflets, making the information easier for participants to understand.

The material covered the definition of Premature Rupture of Membranes (PROM), its signs and symptoms, the importance of receiving care in the delivery room, and recommendations that should be followed during hospitalization, such as limiting physical activity according to healthcare providers’ instructions, maintaining proper perineal hygiene, avoiding self-performed vaginal examinations, and monitoring fetal movements. The presenter also explained several conditions that require immediate reporting to a midwife or physician, including fever, changes in the color or odor of amniotic fluid, vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, increasingly strong and regular contractions, and decreased fetal movements.
Throughout the session, participants demonstrated strong enthusiasm. They paid close attention to the presentation, actively interacted with the presenter, and participated in the discussion session. During the question-and-answer session, one participant asked about the causes of PROM. The presenter explained that PROM may result from various factors, including infections of the birth canal or fetal membranes, multiple pregnancy, excessive amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios), a previous history of PROM, cervical abnormalities, trauma, and smoking, which can weaken the fetal membranes. However, in some cases, the exact cause cannot be clearly identified.
At the end of the activity, the presenter conducted a brief evaluation by asking participants several questions about the material that had been presented. The participants answered the questions correctly, indicating that they had understood the information well. The session concluded with a summary of the key points, distribution of educational leaflets for future reference at home, and a group photo for documentation.
Through this PKRS activity, family members are expected to gain a better understanding of Premature Rupture of Membranes (PROM), recognize the importance of following healthcare providers’ recommendations during treatment, and identify danger signs requiring immediate medical attention. With increased knowledge, families are expected to provide optimal support for pregnant women, helping ensure safe management and preventing complications for both mother and baby. The PKRS activity was conducted smoothly, orderly, and received positive responses from all participants.
