NERS NEWS — Surabaya — A fire broke out in the Sukolilo Baru Gang 8 area of Surabaya on Friday, August 7, 2026, at approximately 10:05 a.m. No fatalities or injuries were reported in the incident. The fire was also successfully brought under control before spreading to nearby buildings or surrounding areas.
At the time of the incident, we, Daniel Mesa Rere, Mohammad Ferdy Arrosyd, and Brilyan Anafi Surya Wiranata, were Nursing Profession Program students undergoing the Community and Family Nursing rotation at Kenjeran Community Health Center. We were on our way to a family under our care for a home visit.
While passing through the area, we saw thick black smoke rising from one of the buildings. At the same time, we heard residents calling for help because a fire had broken out.
Upon seeing the situation, we immediately approached the location and assisted residents with the initial response. Based on preliminary information received from residents in the area, the fire was suspected to have been related to an electrical short circuit. However, the exact cause of the fire remains under the authority of the relevant officials to determine through further investigation.

We then coordinated with residents to attempt to disconnect the electricity supply at the meter near the location in order to reduce the risk of electrical hazards and prevent the situation from worsening. This step was carried out while continuing to prioritize the safety of both ourselves and the residents at the scene.
Amid the situation, we also immediately contacted the 112 emergency service to report the incident and request assistance from the fire department.
While waiting for the emergency responders to arrive, we and the residents worked together to carry out an initial firefighting effort. Water was passed from one resident to another in a relay toward the fire to help control the flames and prevent them from growing and spreading to the surrounding area.
The cooperation among residents in carrying out the initial response helped keep the fire under control. Shortly afterward, the firefighting team arrived at the scene and immediately took over the response.
After the firefighters completed the extinguishing process, the fire was completely put out. There were no fatalities or injuries, and the fire did not spread to nearby buildings or surrounding areas.
For us, the incident provided firsthand experience of the importance of preparedness and rapid response when facing emergencies in the community. Although we were carrying out an academic activity at the time, we felt it was important to take action and assist according to our capacity and the conditions at the scene.
We also recognized that the successful initial response was inseparable from the concern and cooperation of the surrounding residents. Quickly identifying the incident, contacting emergency services, coordinating with others, and helping control the fire before the authorities arrived were important factors in preventing the fire from spreading further.
After the fire was extinguished and the situation was declared safe, conditions around the area gradually returned to normal. As a final reminder, we encourage the community to remain cautious and increase awareness of potential hazards at home, particularly when using electrical installations, electrical equipment, and gas appliances. Ensure that electrical equipment is used properly, avoid overloading a single electrical source, and regularly check the condition of cables, power outlets, gas regulators, and gas hoses. Simple measures such as ensuring that stoves and electrical appliances are switched off after use can help prevent fires and maintain everyone’s safety.

This news report is based on the incident that we directly experienced and witnessed at the scene. It has been prepared truthfully and may be used as appropriate.
