Unair Nurse Professional Students Hold PKRS Session to Prevent Vision Loss from Ocular Emergencies

NERS NEWS — Group 5 Class of 49 students from the Nurse Professional Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) session titled “Ocular Emergencies” in the outpatient waiting area of the Eye Clinic at Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA) on Friday, September 25, 2026, starting at 09:30 AM WIB. This educational initiative targeted patients and their families to raise awareness, knowledge, and understanding regarding early detection and first aid for eye emergencies, aiming to prevent complications and permanent blindness.

The session was delivered directly through interactive lectures, discussions, and brainstorming, supported by educational media such as posters and leaflets. The event was moderated by Eka Dwi Wulan Ambarwati, with core material presented systematically by student speakers Eka Oktaviana Febiyanti and Laili Rahmawati. The content covered definitions of ocular emergencies, urgency classifications (emergent, urgent, and semi-urgent), various forms of eye trauma (blunt force, penetrating injuries, chemical burns, radiation exposure, and insect bites), and warning signs including sudden vision loss, severe pain, foreign body sensation, and intraocular bleeding. Additionally, students addressed common eye care myths and facts, emphasizing the dangers of rubbing eyes containing debris and advising against using non-sterile betel leaf extracts.

The event proceeded smoothly in an orderly atmosphere and was attended by over a dozen patients and family members in the clinic waiting area. The entire activity was organized independently by the student team, with Muhammad Ubaidillah, Amanda Mutiara Dewi, Najwa Insania Sabila, and Jihan Nadira Wardhani facilitating the program. Participants showed high enthusiasm during the discussion, particularly regarding first aid for chemical burns, such as immediate eye irrigation with running water for at least 20 minutes before going to the hospital and the critical warning never to remove penetrating objects from the eye independently.

This preventive education was conducted to reduce the incidence of vision impairment complications caused by delayed or improper initial management. This initiative serves as a concrete effort by Unair Faculty of Nursing students to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.

“Through proper understanding of ocular emergencies, patients and families are expected to respond promptly without panic and avoid harmful actions such as rubbing the eye or attempting to self-neutralize chemicals, ensuring timely medical intervention to preserve vision,” stated a representative of the PKRS organizing team.

Through this PKRS session, participants are expected to recognize warning signs and perform appropriate first aid for eye injuries before receiving medical care. This program underscores the ongoing commitment of Unair Faculty of Nursing students to educating the public and promoting optimal eye health.
