The 15-minute session was initiated by Group 1 Class of 49 under the guidance of academic advisor Hidayat Arifin, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., PhD, and clinical instructor Nina Yaroh U., S.Kep., Ns. The education targeted patients’ families to enhance their understanding of effective coughing techniques, enabling them to assist patients in clearing sputum and maintaining airway patency.
The event commenced with moderator Kurnianingtyas Novikasari M., S.Kep., who opened the session with greetings, introduced the young nurse team, and outlined the objectives and timeline of the presentation. Core materials were then delivered communicatively and clearly by Sabrina Restu Maharani, S.Kep., and Yusuf Rayhan Sameer, S.Kep.

Participants were also educated on cough etiquette as a crucial component of maintaining hygiene and minimizing the risk of respiratory infection transmission.
“Controlled and targeted effective cough exercises maximize secretion clearance without causing excessive fatigue. Family support plays a key role in assisting and reminding patients to perform these techniques properly,” explained the presentation team.
To facilitate better understanding, the student team distributed leaflets detailing effective coughing techniques, step-by-step procedures, key precautions, and cough etiquette. Participants were encouraged to engage in discussions and ask questions regarding how to help patients perform effective coughing. The Q&A interaction was facilitated by Aqso Al Falistin, S.Kep.
The session proceeded with a comprehension evaluation through a brief Q&A review. Participants were asked to summarize the primary goals, basic steps of effective coughing, and proper cough etiquette. The evaluation showed that participants successfully grasped the material and could recall key points. The event concluded with a summary and closing remarks of appreciation from the moderator. The entire event was documented by Nonie Decyeka, S.Kep. as note-taker, recorded visually by Andini Irdana, S.Kep., and monitored by Nurul Jannah, S.Kep. as observer.
Through this educational initiative, patients’ families are expected to actively support patients in performing effective cough exercises and adhering to cough etiquette throughout their care.
