Airlangga University Nursing Profession Students B27 Conduct Health Education on Post-Caesarean Wound Care at Airlangga University Hospital

NERS NEWS – Nursing Profession students from Class B27, Group D4_3, Universitas Airlangga organized a health education session on post-operative wound care following sectio caesarea (SC). This activity is part of their professional nursing practice, focusing on promotive and preventive efforts to improve patient health outcomes, particularly for mothers after childbirth surgery.

The education session was conducted by Nursing Profession students of Class B27 Group D4_3 who were undergoing clinical practice. The participants included post-sectio caesarea patients and their families who were receiving treatment in the IRNA OBGYN ward at Airlangga University Hospital. The activity was also supervised by ward nurses serving as clinical instructors.

This activity was held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at a time adjusted to the patients’ conditions to ensure it did not interfere with medical care schedules. The session took place in the IRNA OBGYN ward of Airlangga University Hospital, which is a specialized inpatient unit for obstetrics and gynecology.

The background of this activity stems from the limited understanding among patients and their families regarding post-operative wound care following a caesarean section. This lack of knowledge may increase the risk of wound infection, delay the healing process, and potentially lead to further complications. Therefore, this educational session aimed to provide accurate and comprehensive information so that patients can independently manage wound care after being discharged from the hospital. In addition, the activity aimed to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining wound hygiene, recognizing signs of infection such as redness, swelling, excessive pain, and discharge, as well as adhering to follow-up care and medication.

The implementation of the activity was carried out systematically through several stages. First, students approached patients and their families to establish a therapeutic relationship. This was followed by the delivery of educational material using an interactive lecture method, combined with discussions and a question-and-answer session. The material included the definition of post-caesarean surgical wounds, proper wound cleaning techniques, the importance of hand hygiene before and after wound care, recommendations for a nutritious diet to accelerate healing, and guidelines on permitted and restricted activities during the recovery period.

To support participants’ understanding, students also used educational media in the form of leaflets containing simple and easy-to-understand steps for wound care. Participants showed enthusiasm throughout the session, demonstrated by their active participation in asking questions and engaging in discussions.

At the end of the session, a simple evaluation was conducted to assess the level of understanding among patients and their families regarding the material presented. The results indicated an improvement in participants’ knowledge about post-sectio caesarea wound care.

Through this educational activity, it is expected that patients and their families will be able to perform proper and independent wound care at home, thereby optimizing the healing process and minimizing the risk of complications. This activity also represents a tangible contribution of Nursing Profession students from Universitas Airlangga in improving public health through continuous educational efforts.
