NERS NEWS — (Surabaya, April 23, 2026) — Students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, class A1 cohort of 2023, carried out a Project Based Learning (PjBL) activity named SIGAP (Alertness in Identifying Symptoms of AMI and Basic Life Support Management) at 17 August Senior High School Surabaya on Thursday, April 23, 2026. This activity aimed to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in recognizing and handling emergency situations, particularly Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), through interactive education and hands-on Basic Life Support (BLS) practice. The target participants were Grade XI science students, who were selected due to their stronger scientific background, making it easier for them to understand health-related materials and effectively apply the skills taught.
The SIGAP PjBL activity was conducted using an interactive learning approach that included information delivery, discussions, as well as demonstrations and hands-on practice of Basic Life Support (BLS). The material covered the introduction to Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), its risk factors, signs and symptoms, and initial management steps. In addition, students were also trained to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) through simulations designed to resemble real-life situations, enabling them not only to understand the concepts theoretically but also to apply these skills when facing emergency conditions.

This activity was carried out because the level of knowledge and preparedness among adolescents in facing emergency situations is still relatively low, especially those related to AMI and BLS. However, taking immediate action such as performing CPR in the first minutes of an incident is crucial to increasing a victim’s chances of survival. Therefore, through this activity, it is expected that students will be able to recognize emergency signs and possess basic skills in providing first aid. This program also represents students’ contribution to improving public health understanding and supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the third goal focusing on Good Health and Well-being.
One of the student presenters stated that this activity is not only aimed at increasing knowledge but also at fostering students’ readiness to act when faced with emergency situations. “We want students not only to understand the material, but also to have the courage and ability to provide first aid quickly and accurately,” they said.
The SIGAP PjBL activity is related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in efforts to improve the quality of public health through training and education on emergency situations.
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being. This program plays a role in enhancing students’ understanding, skills, and preparedness in dealing with emergency situations such as cardiac arrest, thereby increasing the chances of survival through quick and accurate first aid response.
- SDG 4: Quality Education. By using a project-based and experiential learning approach, this activity also contributes to improving the quality of education through interactive, practical, and experience-based methods.

The SIGAP PjBL activity is expected to have a sustainable impact on students in improving their preparedness to face emergency situations, as well as strengthening the role of nursing students as agents of change in raising health awareness within the community. In addition, this activity also represents a tangible contribution of educational institutions in supporting the achievement of the SDGs, particularly in the health and education sectors.
